My boy is very anti leaving his domain and visting the vet, and even more against leaving the carrier when at the vets! He is a big, muscular 6kg cat. Can anyone recommend a decent top loading carrier.

I have this one, from Curver. It's really easy to get them into and very sturdy and easy to carry.

Thank you @Toddlerteaplease, off to Google. Hope your girls are well?

I've got a few hefty cats in these sort of carriers that they use at Cats Protection. You can get covers to go over them and pop a blanket in the bottom.
They are easy to clean but I have noticed some have rusted possibly as they are used and cleaned so much (way more than you would for one cat).

Get the coated wire top loaders. I'm a vet. This is what we use in practice. They are fab.

Thank you all for your suggestions

Use one with a door at the end and stand it on its opposite end. Hold the cat upright with its back towards you, one hand under its bottom and one round its chest and lower it rear end first, shut the door and tilt it slowly onto its base. By the time the cat realises it's going into the carrier it's too late. Worked every time for me, with several cats including Maine Coons.

My carrier's something like this one. You can unclip the top and take it off if the cat decides, once at the vets, that it would rather stay inside thank you.

I second the Curver one, it’s got a small flap at the front you can open to stroke the cats through (I’m assuming that’s what it’s for!). My life is changed since I got a top opening one!

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 15/08/2020 18:07

Oh forgot to say, one of my boys is 6kg and fit in there fine, it’s a decent size.

onlinelinda · 15/08/2020 18:07

I use an old wire side loader, but what i wanted to say is don't get those carriers with plastic hinges, or clip fastenings, as they always break.

Vinorosso74 · 15/08/2020 18:27

Yes the plastic clips can break with a strong head barge! An old cat of mine broke out a carrier this way.

Mia184 · 15/08/2020 18:44

I use a basket that is actually a carrier for small dogs for my cat Micky. She doesn’t mind being in there. I got it for my previous cat who absolutely hated being inside a carrier. She was absolutely fine with this one and even enjoyed car rides.

We’ve bought two of these. Our vets think they are brilliant. We’ve had 8 kg of cat in them and they were fab. Three different ways of opening them. Top, half or front. Strap into the car using your seatbelt.

Zoo plus are cheaper than amazon.

100% one of these:

(Make sure you get the right size/ tray for the bottom)

TiddleTaddleTat · 16/08/2020 11:22

Agree with PPs the MDC plastic coated wire top- loaders are what all the rescues and fosterers use

tara738 · 16/08/2020 20:00

mia184 that one is lovely! where is it from?

thecatneuterer · 16/08/2020 20:10

I was also going to say the MDC one that Vinorosso linked. It's the one most welfare organisations, including ours, use.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 16/08/2020 20:26

Blimey, I haven't even got a top loading cat. Whatever that is!

Worried74 · 17/08/2020 15:23

Thanks everyone, all sorted now

I hope he is cooperative with his new carrier!

Lurkingforawhile · 17/08/2020 17:47

We've got the wire carriers and they are great. They only issue is that the trays are brittle and cracking now (after 12 years!). Has anyone found a replacement?

Bargebill19 · 17/08/2020 18:36

In my old wire one I found a cat litter tray - the cheap, shallow ones fitted perfectly.
