Older cat needing possible dental work

Bigcat is 16 and in relatively good health, no thyroid or kidney issues and generally happy although has definitely slowed down the past year and now chills out upstairs most of the day.
He gave us a scare mid June with a wobbly phase but a course of anti-inflammatories and he's doing fine (kidneys also dandy after this).
Problem is he is now suffering from feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (sounds icky) so refusing to eat even super smooth foods.
In himself he is absolutely unchanged and still keen for food but just can't eat it.
Trying a few days on anti-inflammatories to see if that helps but vet has said an operation may be the only feasible choice.
He does have a heart murmur so slightly increased risks but not hugely.
Question is do we put him through the ga, operation and recovery at his age?
Both recent issues aren't necessarily age related but I'm guessing he is at risk of developing more serious issues so would it be cruel to have this done when realistically he may not have long left anyway?
For context we have two preschoolers, one with asd so the house isn't a calm oasis and does cause stress during the day for bigcat.

My cats go insane for those licky tubes!
Good luck for Monday. I reckon you're doing the right thing.

SoddingWeddings · 13/08/2020 20:31

Plain cooked (boiled maybe) white fish, flaked should be easy enough for him. Or tuna in water. Doesn't need chewing if it's fine enough.

FWIW I think you're doing the right thing.

Concentrate on keeping puss hydrated.

My neighbours cat had extractions at 23 years old. He was in awful pain and they just did it. The vet used approprate anaesthetic and sedation and the cat pulled through. He went on to live quite happily for a whole year before dying of natural causes. You simply cannot let a cat suffer.

thegcatsmother · 14/08/2020 16:51

GCat had a canine out last year at 16, and will be having a dental within the next fortnight. The vet wants him in the night before to make sure he's hydrated properly, and will then give his teeth a thorough clean. He only eats wet food and won't touch dry, so his teeth get icky quite quickly.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/08/2020 17:06

Given the age would it be better to get all the back teeth out so you don’t have to do it again in a year?.

FrankieChips · 14/08/2020 22:10

Our cat had the same op last year. She’s 17 now. She had 9 teeth taken out and although she never stopped eating with the teeth problems she did seem happier after.

After the op we tried all foods with her and she finally ate Sheba from the tray while we held it for her. The kind with gravy. She recovered quite quickly and has managed to eat her usual foods just fine.

Had a call from the surgery. Pre-op check and they've found a mass under his ribcage so not looking good. He'll have a scan and we'll make some decisions after Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/08/2020 12:10

I’m sorry OP. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Bowserlovesmojitos · 17/08/2020 14:23

SadSadWith palliative care he could be here a few more weeks. We feel that's more for us than him.
Surgery isn't an option due to location .
Saying goodbye later today. He's going to leave the biggest paw prints on our hearts SadSadSad

Wolfiefan · 17/08/2020 15:27

I’m so very sorry OP.

dianec401 · 17/08/2020 15:42

That is very sad OP. But you have done the right thing by him. He has had a happy life where he was loved and looked after and he's only gone down hill over the past week or so. If you hadn't been brave enough to take the tough decision to get him checked out this could have dragged on a lot longer so I hope that will give you some comfort. You have saved him lots of pain and he can drift off now peacefully.

IAmTooBloodyHot · 17/08/2020 15:59

Bless him Sad

Janaih · 17/08/2020 17:22

So sorry OP thoughts with you and your family Flowers

Vinorosso74 · 17/08/2020 17:51

Oh no how sad Flowers

Bowserlovesmojitos · 17/08/2020 18:00

Thank you for kind thoughts and words. All over now.
Vets were incredibly kind and slightly broke protocol to do everything outside so we could be with him to the end.
I have no idea how I'm supposed to wake up without his purr now Sad

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/08/2020 19:41

I’m sorry, it’s such a hard loss to bear. You did the right thing for him when he needed you to help his suffering.

Beamur · 17/08/2020 19:42

I'm so sorry, but agree that at least this way you have saved him from pain.
