Cat tail hanging on floor

I’m a bit worried as I haven’t seen dcat since last night

He didn’t come in and hasn’t come back for breakfast

Usually he’s be hungry by now

I didn’t pay much attention to him when he was in yesterday as it was a family birthday but a family member mentioned that his tail was so long that it was dragging along the floor

Didn’t think too much of it and now I’m thinking that’s probably not a good sign

What could have happened to him?

Has he come homes?.

bumblebeewine · 07/08/2020 11:40

Is he home?

Rebelwithallthecause · 08/08/2020 09:21

He’s come home!

He is able to jump up onto the windowsill

Eats plenty and is drinking and seems to be going to the loo ok

His tail still doesn’t seem right as he’s not holding it up like he usually would but it doesn’t seem to be causing him any bother

My cat came home dragging his tail - it was basically really limp - couldn't hold it up. He eventually let me touch it and he had a bite at the base - vet gave him some antibiotics and a few days he was right as rain

If his tail has been PULLED on the other hand it can basically detach it at the base and in those situations it's better to amputate as gets in the way when going to toilet etc - but this is worst case scenario

So glad he's safe OP, hopefully all is well with his tail.

Yes, check for a bite. My girl cat had this and she'd been bitten on the underside of her tail. A trip to the vets & antibiotics sorted it out within days.

BigGee · 08/08/2020 09:40

Bite in a fight is my first guess, but he needs to go to the vet. I thought our boy had a broken tail, it was a bite and infection. Antibiotics had him right really quickly.

I was going to say a possible bite too. One of our cats was similar and the vet gave him an antibiotic injection. He was fine (after we dashed off one weekend to an out of hours vet). Good sign though if yours is jumping about and eating ok. Might be an idea to still have a vet check him over though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2020 10:13

I’d take him to the vets to check.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/08/2020 10:17

One of mine (Karl) had this and it was a bite at the base of the tail that became an abscess of doom.
His back end was shaved and he looked like a poodle for several months.
Definitely worth a vet check.

You definitely need to take him to a vet.

Chemenger · 08/08/2020 17:41

Definitely needs a trip to the vet. Our cat had a limp tail, vet initially thought it was broken and would need to be amputated but it turned out to be an infected bite, which needed antibiotics.
