Elderly cat knocks every single water bowl over any ideas?

What can I do? Its the 17 year old next door. He’s constantly either playing with water or drinking it. Every time my door is open hes coming in and im getting the mop out. I have noticed he drinks beautifully if im holding it but its no fun for my back! And my older neighbour wont beable to crouch for long. Is there anything that cant be knocked over?

I think there are heavy bowls specifically for this. They are weighted.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 03/08/2020 13:15

You can get bowls where the sides slope outwards slightly. Would that work?

EachandEveryone · 03/08/2020 13:21

Im wondering if hes finding it hard to get down so low.

We have these two bowls. The cat one is quite weighty and also has good non slip feet and the stainless steel insert is removable

We also bought our lady cat an angled one as it was easier for him to reach ( he had a dodgy leg and would sometimes lie to eat ?

Do they all drink excessively at this age?

Excessive drinking in cats is sometimes related to kidney issues, which are not uncommon.

Is it deliberate or is he going blind and knocking it by accident? If he's drinking lots of water has he been checked for diabetes? What's his weight like? Probably worth getting a vet to look at home in case it's a symptom of something serious.

EachandEveryone · 03/08/2020 13:59

Nah hes tiny now. Hes still groomong eating like a horse and going out. They wont take him to a vet incase he doesnt come back out. They dont have much money. They love him but will let nature take its course. I cant interfere. Im not-sure if hes blind every bowl of water he sees his paw goes right in hes not happy until its all over our floors.

We have the CatMate water fountain. I contains about 3L of water so it's impossible to knock over.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 03/08/2020 14:04

Losing weight and drinking loads could be diabetic or thyroid. Really a trip to the vet to find out would be kinder.

heymammy · 03/08/2020 15:21

Could you try filling a pint glass instead? Apart from filthy puddles, this is the only thing my dcats will drink water from Confused

Purpleartichoke · 03/08/2020 15:30

Cat water fountain. It satisfies the desire for the water to be moving, hence the cat doesn’t have to bat it with a paw, and it’s heavy because it holds so much water. They also tend to be higher which works better for older cats.

Toddler bowl with suction at the base. Works a treat.

TroysMammy · 03/08/2020 15:44

I've got a Petmate fountain which is on a cheap plastic tray as Haribo likes to swirl it around and flick his wet paws before drinking.

Infullbloom · 03/08/2020 16:14

'letting nature take its course' Hmm
In other words they're not going to get him the medical treatment he clearly needs and they are legally obliged to seek as his owners, instead they'll let him suffer, probably in pain. I'd be having words with them regarding their responsibilities. There are charity vets if they've no money.

As far as the water goes he's probably got arthritis in his neck and spine hence being happy to drink whilst you hold the bowl up. He needs his bowls raised up so he doesn't have to bend down.

thecatneuterer · 03/08/2020 16:25

I've got a bowl like this - it's completely impossible to knock over:

Lots of people dont lije to take them to the vets my own consultant at work was a firm believer in letting his cats age without interfering. He is very loved and ive offered to take him they can go to the pdsa but wont.

She has made him this contraption and he still drags it over.

Mine has a Catmate fountain. The design has a bowl section at the top, which is useful for cats who might not be able to bend down low to drink.

hopefulvibes · 03/08/2020 20:11

I have one similar to this, from a cat who used to knock the bowl over on a daily basis, she literally can't knock this over https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088D2GCM6/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_McgkFbGWDRFYH
