New cat, issues with claws?

We picked DCat up last week from the RSPCA. She's been an absolute dream and is settling in so well we couldn't have anticipated it (we have dogs so the ride was always going to be longer)

The only issue is that she seems to get her claws snagged everywhere. So my jumpers have holes in, our bedding, she gets them caught in her vetbed and in the carpet.

It's not that she's scratching and they're getting hooked up, it's more like they're just "there" all the time IYSWIM? I've never come across this before and wondered if there's anything we can do, or whether a long period of being in one of those little pods in the RSPCA has allowed them to get over long?

Is it an older cat? Sometimes they can't retract their claws and they need clipping to avoid the issues you mention. You get cat claw clippers like the picture which make it relatively easy depending on the cats nature. If you're unsure about doing it yourself one of the nurses at your local vet practice can do it, usually costs about £10.

They are probably just over long.
I adopted an indoor can and even just sitting on my knee her claws stabbed my legs, despite having several scratching posts.
The vet did clip them at one of her vaccination appointments then did them every few months. During lockdown I bought clippers and did them myself as they needed doing every 2/3 months.
Since being introduced to the great outdoors her claws no longer need clipping as they naturally wear down quicker through climbing.

She's about 3 and was a stray bought in with her kittens. She's raised them well and now been rehomed with us.

fatherbrownsbicycle that's exactly what happens with her. She's absolutely not doing it deliberately, but all of a sudden you turn round and she's staring plaintively at the carpet where she's attached by one claw.

She will go outdoors eventually, but we're in no rush at this point. Looks like I will have to investigate nail clippers

Loads of YouTube videos on claw clipping, even if you do one claw a day your improving the situation.

Chungus · 27/07/2020 16:41

Does she have a scratching post?

TreacherousPissFlap · 27/07/2020 17:22

I posted a reply but it seems to have vanished Hmm

She has a post but appears indifferent to it, having said that she doesn't seem to scratch very much at all. When we collected her I recall seeing one of those cardboard scratchy jobs, perhaps she would prefer one of them?

Our last foster had this problem. Getting him a really tall scratching post which he could stretch right out to use fixed it. He was a very long cat and needed a 90cm post. He could just reach the top at full stretch. We rewarded him for scratching on it with a couple of Dreamies a day and he learned very fast! You will probably find that once you let her out she will naturally wear her claws down.

Chemenger · 27/07/2020 17:26

It sounds ludicrous but we had to show our foster what to do, every time we went past the post we gave it a quick scratch.

JorisBonson · 27/07/2020 17:28

I get the vet to do our old girls. I'm way too scared 😂

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/07/2020 17:29

Mine liked the extra tall posts. Bought a extra fat one once and he sprayed on the bed so that went back.

Tesco’s do the card pads with catnip, £4-ish. You can get huge ones shaped like sofas too.

LittleMissnotLittleMrs · 27/07/2020 17:37

I will answer but not until the requisite photo of your most important household member. I can’t believe no one has pointed this out.

TreacherousPissFlap · 27/07/2020 18:25

Thanks all, much appreciated. And as requested, a photo!

Mine likes the flat cardboard scratchers
He did once get his front claws hooked together, toppled over dramatically and then screamed until I rescued him HmmBlush

We have to clip our cats claws because he's an inside cat and my legs were getting shredded because when I was working from home he used to climb up me to see what I was doing.

You can get cheap cardboard scratching pads from ZooPlus.

We bough Leo a house (link below) and he loves it and we have a couple of scratching posts as well.

Your vets should be able to clip her claws for you if you don't feel able to yet.
I agree that lots of scratching posts aren't great as the cats can pull them over, need a tall sturdy or a mat one.

TreacherousPissFlap · 28/07/2020 13:32

That house looks great, though DH (a farmers son who, until recently had a rather brusque attitude to pets without a purpose) may consider it a step too far.

It is however her one week birthday so perhaps we should treat her?! Wink

@TreacherousPissFlap

Leo loves it! I wan't keen at first, but the cardboard scratcher in the bottom is great and you can get replacements.

Obligatory photo attached but Leo always looks this grumpy, he was actually brimming with delight in his new house :)

samlh, for some reason the combination of the photo and your description of Leo "brimming with delight" has really given me a laugh Grin
Many thanks.

Always a pleasure :)

He's not always been that grumpy looking. As he is getting older he's getting worse (he's only 7 months lol).

Thank you! I have a tall post that is used regularly. Also a floor scratcher that I’ve attached to the stairs that is loved but only if hanging vertically! I also clip nails. One curls like a hedgehog and I have to burrow for each paw. The other lies on my lap On his back (admittedly not his choice) along my legs with his legs akimbo. I cut as soon as they get sharp
