What can I do for these poor cats?

Hi all,
I work in an extremely deprived area in the middle of densely populated terraces. Many of the residents have cats and there are also a good number of strays around too. Very few people neuter their cats and increasingly I am seeing more tiny female cats that have obviously just given birth. I rarely see the kittens so I don't know whether the cats are abandoning them or they are not surviving or what. It's awful. This morning while working outside, a little cat - certainly under a year old - came for affection, and she had clearly just had kittens. She was a gorgeous little thing, probably owned by someone as she looked clean and not malnourished...but it's just so sad and irresponsible. And it's even worse for the strays who have no home to return to.
What can I do about this? Is there anything? Would vets provide me with information leaflets about getting pets neutered? TIA for any ideas - sorry for the rant, I just feel really sad about it.

Contact a rescue organisation in the area (doesn't have to be a large one, some individuals do a fantastic job) and they can trap the strays. Vets could probably provide flyers with potential discounts for neutering- I could be wrong but I was under the impression that those on benefits/low income could perhaps access some vet services for free from certain places.

What area are you in?

I'm in the North East. I'm going to look up the nearest rescue centre and discuss possible trapping/neutering/returning, or similar. You're probably right about discounted fees/free neutering but for most people around here it will not be a priority. (No disrespect intended, simply a fact.)

OK. I have no knowledge of or contacts in that area. You can find all rescues in all areas here: www.catchat.org

There are various scheme around, but I think you will need to be proactive here. You will need to arrange the neutering and pick up and return the cats to the 'owners'. This is generally the only way to get things done. I have years of experience of cat rescue in these sorts of areas, and the only way seems to be to offer everything for free and to sort it out so everything is done for the owners. If you wait for them to actually take the cat to the vet, even if it's free, it generally doesn't happen. Good luck.

I wonder if they’re breeding the cats endlessly and selling the kittens. I had a neighbour who did that. The female was constantly pregnant.
