Would you get another cat?

We have only ever owned 2 cats before and both of them have died after a couple of years, hear me out.
Our first cat Boo was a street cat who we got through cats protection , he went outside and seemed happy enough, always bringing us back gifts etc loved being outside and was a real character, until he drank some anti freeze 😢 and sadly we had to put him to sleep as it was too late for him, we had him for over 2 years and we were heartbroken.
After a year we decided we was ready to adopt again and got Ralph again through cats protection but he was a kitten, we soon discovered as he got older that he had wobbly cat syndrome, not badly but noticeable, we kept him indoors. One day he discovered the trampoline netting and got out of the garden and he gained freedom, once we realised what happened we moved it and then he used to cry for hours to be let outside on the trampoline again, we asked neighbours to keep and eye on him and he just stayed in the backs that is high with grass and seemed happy, I was like a worried parent, and then he learned how to jump back into the garden and I was so proud as he couldn't do this before. Then one fateful night we got a babysitter and went to a friends party, got in the car and drove off around 10pmh, and our little man ran out in front of our car and we got him, he died in front of us, this hurt me badly and I was affected by it for a while after as he was my little special guy, we think he was spooked by a dog and caused him to run.
We are moving next year to a close, so a street with hardly any traffic and lots of wooded areas around us, would we be crazy to consider another cat? We love cats and have a lot of love to give but due to losing 2 I don't know if we can be trusted or if I want to go through losing another cat, the children were very upset, we have two 11 year old dogs so we are capable of raising kids and dogs, is it bad luck we have had or should we adopt another cat next year?

It seems like you could offer a cat a good home, so go for it if you feel ready.

Lorddenning1 · 22/07/2020 08:11

We could offer a cat lots of love, we worship them in our house, poor dogs, we are that family that try and pet a cat when we see one when we are out walking, my 9 year old son wanted to go to a cat cafe for his birthday bless him, but having only ever had 2 cats before and then lost 2 cats makes me think we can't look after them, what if something happens to the new one :(

How about an indoor cat? I have to Persians who only go out into my garden. They couldn't care less about going anywhere else. They are a wonderful breed and ideally suited to indoors. Or I'm sure CPL would have indoor cats for other reasons.

We've had a lot of cats over the years. We lost 4 in the space of 4 years - road accident, poisoned or just disappeared. We said never again, but then DH found a kitten in a packing crate at his workplace, no sign of mother so we took her in and she was with us for 17 years. So I'd say, Go for it.

I would think of it as giving a cat stuck in a cattery somewhere a wonderful home and life !

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/07/2020 12:25

You could get one but cat proof the back garden?

monkeyonthetable · 22/07/2020 12:27

We've had three cats over the years, all rescues. First came to us as a tiny kitten and lived 8 years but died of a heart condition. Next two came as a pair but one got run over soon after he was first let out of the house. His brother is still with us, fifteen years on and is a member of the family. I couldn't be without a cat for long.

thank you for your replies, we are definitely more cat people, we just love them, we have had 2 cats and both of them have been different with their own personalities. The cat that we ran over has really affected me because like i said he had wobbly cat syndrome and we had him since we was 8 weeks old and we have watched him grow up to be more confident and he was a happy little chap, a real mummies boy, so to watch him die right in front of me was something i will never forget, im tearing up thinking about it and it was over a year ago. He wasnt a normal cat that could jump or hunt, even though he did hunt me a big leaf once, i know we have alot to offer another cat, maybe two, but im just worried that something may happen to it and we are left heartbroken once again. The house we are moving into next year has a big garden thats has woods at the back of it, we could cat proof the garden or even put a little cat flap in the fence to encourage it to go into the woods area instead of out the front as even though its a close, cars will still be coming in and out. The place were we live now has a one way street so this is why i will not get another why we live here, there are lots of cats around, but im scared after last time, we make do with stroking the neighbours cat who is very friendly :) attached pics of my lovely cats, black cat is Boo, the street cat and Ralph is in the second pic, our little wobbly guy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your two cats. You obviously love cats and there are so many cats who need a good home. I think you should adopt a new cat.
I had to have my beautiful cat put to sleep in June and have already adopted a new cat who is just lovely and is settling in really well.

Rescues often have cats that need to be indoor cats - would that be an option for you? You can bring up a kitten as an indoor cat (in theory, it doesn't miss what it's never had) but you do need to provide extra stimulation to stop young indoor cats getting bored and/or destructive.

madcatladyforever · 26/07/2020 16:40

However you lose your cat it's just tragic. The new place sounds ideal. I lived deep in the countryside down a one car only track at one stage and Dcat still managed to get run over. She was out at night and in the wrong place at the wrong time.
