Enclosed litter tray

I had to get my 19 year old girl and enclosed litter tray with cat flat as she is just so messy and stinky and spreads litter liberally all over the house, kicks it all out.
She hates it, she will go in but miaows loudly at the indignity and the whole thing rocks from side to side while she is in there, I don't know what the hell she is doing.
Then she comes out and miaows angrily at me and stalks off to sleep in the cupboard - her favourite place.
Got a special mat to to reduce the cat litter trail. So far so good but she hates that as well - looks like she's walking on lava!!

😂 Have you tried leaving the flap off to see if she likes it any more? Our cat is only very young yet but hated the enclosed tray at first. Left the lid off for ages then put the lid on without the flap and now she's in it normally. Your girl might be too old for change though!

Surprisingly she's pretty good with change. We've moved twice recently across the country and she's just settled down as if we never moved at all. Got the hang of the new cat flap right away and wanders about in the garden.
I may well leave the cat flap bit off, it probably smells horrible in there even though I change it daily.

There was a cat behaviourist on the bbc a while back who advised a 50l plastic storage tub with a hole cut in the side.

My cats will not tolerate a flap on their enclosed tray - so take it off. The smell will still be less than an open tray. You can buy litter deodoriser from pets at home. It works if you scoop out the waste and then spray over the left litter. We all have those moments we just can’t face emptying and cleaning the entire tray and replacing barely used litter with fresh!

What size is it? We always had normal size trays for our normal size cats, but had to get a jumbo one after acquiring a jumbo size cat (twice the size of the others), and now all of them much prefer the huge one - the normal size ones rarely get used.

So if your tray is normal size, it’s possible she’d prefer a big one, & not be so angry about it.

Lovely pair of cats btw.

This shows the size difference really well (not my pic). It’s obviously a lot less confining & more comfortable for them to use.

It’s the Savic Nestor from zooplus.

We got a top opening litter tray from Pets at Home and it's been a life changer (my boy cat likes to stand up and wee and however high the sides of a tray were he'd manage to pee on the floor, even with the covered ones it would find its way through the join!) And it's bigger than an average tray so lots of room for digging and maneuvering.

They have to hop up onto the top when they get out, so any litter on their paws goes back into the tray, and the whole top comes off so super easy to clean. Would recommend taking a look at top opening trays, much less mess!

Ooo that’s interesting- goes to have a google.

What a great idea, I will try that.
I got a huge litter tray. She is settling down with it but is still suspicious of the mat.
She's always had the worst stinky poos her whole life. Dometimes I've been embarrassed to have guests over because I cannot get rid of the smell but then........

She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease stage 2 and I put her on the kidney diet as advised by the vet and there is no longer ANY smell whatsoever. It's like a miracle. After all these years of poo management!!

That must be what’s wrong with my ‘D’H toileti habits 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Glad is sorted though!!
