My beloved boy has been missing for 48 hours now. He is an outdoor cat and comes and goes as he pleases. He ventures further than our garden but is always within earshot of me calling him.

I've hung up blankets outside, put his usual food out and walked around the surrounding area calling him. I'm not sure whay else I can try. He is on every local facebook page and I've reported it to the microchip company and Cat's Protection who I got him from. He has a collar so its obvious he has a home.

Has anyone got any positive stories of their cats randomly reappearing after unexplained absence?

We have had him for a year so he knows his home. I'm worried he's either hurt or that someone has taken him in.

@BalletShoe I get that sometimes people 'don't realise' they have hit something, or may even mistaken it for a smaller animal but thats not the point... people are pigs and i believe in karma 😂 like Fluffy said your lovely strong boy made it home, what a fighter! 😺

Glad you found him.

He's huge, and white. I really struggle to see how you wouldn't see him, even if he ran out too quickly for you to stop, I think you would still know.

He's home now, wrapped up and will be in for his op at some point tomorrow or Tuesday. It certainly hasn't harmed his appetite for Felix!

Poor boy. He needs to keep his strength up though. No point being injured and hungry.

So two hours after the bandage was on, he had ripped it off in a fit of growling and hissing.

We went back to the vet today and the orthopaedic surgeon had looked at the x-rays. They found a very aggressive tumour in the bone which is likely to spread quickly if we don't act quickly. The options were to take biopsies and bandage him up again then try and treat the tumour and the break which would have been weeks or even months of pain, treatment and confinement which he might not have survived anyway.

As a result the vet agreed that it was best to amputate his leg to save him any more trauma and to nip the tumour in the bud.

Not a nice outcome at all for my poor boy who has already been through alot but at least this will be the quickest in terms of suffering and recovery.

He is with the vet overnight and will have his leg off forst thing tomorrow morning.

I feel so sad for him Sad

I had a cat that used to go missing to punish us for bringing another pet into the house. She would stay away for ten days at a time. Then another one went missing for a month and came home in better shape than before she we went away.

Unfortunately male cats can be quite stupid and often need rescuing.

Your doing the right thing! He might not have even been hit by a car. Tumours can make bone very weak.

Poor cat. They adapt to 3 legs.

Sorry to hear this OP, I hope the surgery goes well and he makes a swift recovery. Cats can manage very well on 3 legs, our neighbours had an amputee cat that could get over the fence with ease and even climb our tree on occasion.

It's a shock, but hopefully it'll be the last of the tumour when his leg has gone. Sorry for your sad news.

Oh Ballet, really sorry to hear this! What a shock! It’s very sad but cats do really adapt very well on three legs, and maybe this whole situation was a catalyst for discovering the cancer before it was untreatable. Please keep us updated and wishing you the best of luck for tomorrow

My neighbour once had a cat randomly come home without a leg.. in a very very bad way as you can imagine! To this day nobody knows what happened to him.. dog attack.. car accident.. human abuse..they sorted him out and cat proofed the garden (lets face it, long term it's best for him in a protected environment) and after a few months of getting used to things he's right as rain again!

Sorry for the horrific story, but in the worst of circumstances can be a positive outcome😘 hope he's okay keep us updated!

Cats are super adaptable to the lose of limb, but I'm so sorry it has turned out this way.

Just a wee update.

The boy's surgery went smoothly and we were able to bring him home last night. I wasn't quite prepared for how bad it would look and I found it quite upsetting.

He is definitely not his wee self at all and is mostly just lying down but he has good pain relief and a quiet comfy space to recover in with me scared to leave his side.

The vet is sending some samples from his leg to the lab to see where we are with the cancer but they are hopeful that it hasn't spread.

He is a poor wee thing and its difficult to see him so worn out - even when the leg was broken he was doing his best to move around and we still got meows and purrs. I know it'll take some time.

@BalletShoe it must be very upsetting, I suppose it must all look quite raw and swollen and it will have been a shock to see your boy like that.
I’m so glad he is home though, and he will surprise you with how quick he recovers. Lots of treats and cuddles are in order!
PS - I’m saying all this but I would be really upset, I’m not trying to diminish your feelings, but sending lots of positive vibes for you and your boy
