My 3mo kitten fell from the landing!

This morning my kitten fell through the gap upstairs down to the hall way 😫

Took her straight to the vets but they don't think it's a fracture on her front elbow. Maybe will do xrays next week if no better.

She's had an injection and got pain killers for the weekend. She's limping but not crying about it. Sourced a dog crate to keep her in with her litter and food to make her rest as much as possible. Feel awful as she really wants to get out.

Any ideas on when I should expect to see an improvement?
I will also be seeking to make the top of the stairs inaccessible for this to happen again.

If the vets think she’s ok wait till morning and see how she is then.

Must’ve been very frightening for you.

Hey. How old is the kitten? The younger the kitten is the more cautious I would be as still growing. On the whole cats are pretty sturdy wee things (although kittens are more vulnerable to breaks, etc). I have three cats of my own, used to have four (R.I.P Binx) and I have fostered with my local rescue so you can call me the crazy cat lady 😊 Did the vet specifically tell you to give her crate rest? If not, I honestly wouldn't bother.

My wee girl jumped out my bedroom window once from the first floor (she's a bloody nutter!). She landed on the grass outside and continued trotting about without a care in the world. She is the lightest and most athletic of all three. Although I don't open the windows wide anymore upstairs as although I know she would probably be fine again I am over protective and don't want to risk it. Plus I don't want my much older, fatter and slightly arthritic cat taking notes!

The chances are it's just a sprain and the limping will stop in a few days although you definitely did the right thing in taking her to the vets. If she is still limping in a few days then that would warrant further investigation such as a scan.

In the meantime, watch out for the following as could be a sign of increased pain, deterioration, etc.

  • increased limping
  • crying or being unusually vocal
  • not eating drinking
  • Changes in the litter box
  • collapsing

Try not to worry, cats are incredibly resilient little beings. Wishing your little fur baby a speedy and straightforward recovery x

Whoops, I just noticed you gave the kitten's age in the heading. Sorry. X

My cat decided to fall out of a 3rd storey window when she was somewhere round 6months old. When I eventually found her she'd scraped her chin. It's only within the last few years, as shes got older that I realise she may have broken her nose. She has been known to snore really loudly and I never see her do the the open mouth sniff either.
At the time my mother was still alive and she was an ex vet nurse, she basically said, no blood, no worries.

If your worried aboutit happening again thread a duvet through the bars (depending what kind og bannisters you have)

Ours used to poke his head through and my heart wa sin my mouth recently when a vivsiting cat did this..and he lives in a bungalow so was probably a mystery to him

It was one of those situations where I realised she was stuck but by the time I moved to help she'd already fallen. I was besides myself this morning, could not stop crying!
Yes the vet did specially say to keep in a crate, although they did actually suggest in the cat box but I didn't think that was completely fair. I let her roam in the kitchen a bit tonight before I put her away for the night. It seems to be worse when she's been in the crate for a while but better when she's been using it more.
She has been eating but not quite as much, and weeing. No poo since this morning though but I'm not sure if the pain relief injection has put her out of sorts. Fingers crossed she does a poo overnight.
I really hope it's just a sprain and it starts to improve. I'm already missing not having her around with me!

Is she ok?.

Pancakeorcrepe · 18/07/2020 17:02

Poor you, you must have been very frightened. Kittens are mad! Some of them never grow out of it. I’m currently fostering a first floor window jumper, none of mine ever did that, and like someone said above, I don’t want my other older and less fit cats taking notes 😹
How is your kitten today? Fingers crossed she will be fine, you did well by taking her to the vet, I’m sure whatever it is, can be fixed.

YouAreMySunshine19 · 18/07/2020 20:55

She seems to be using it better today thankfully. She isn't crying when walking but is still limping and not putting much weight on it.
Eating and pooing and weeing regularly so that's reassuring.
I'm keeping everything crossed she keeps having more improvement the next few days.
Thank you for asking 😊
