Cat has swallowed a dummie

My cat swallowed a bottle teat and she had surgery to get it out and she almost died, she was young so didn't have insurance at the time and we paid around 2500.
I got insurance after all this happened.
I have been so careful to keep bottles and dummies away from her but she managed to get a dummie and has chewed the tip of again.
I cant find the tip and I dont know if my insurance will cover the same thing we wont be able to pay again.
I dont really know what advice I'm looking for maybe just a hand hold.
I cant protect her I feel like it's just going to keep happening. So I feel I'm going to have to give her away no matter what happens because I do love her and just want her to be safe.

Is it just the tip of the dummy, so a little bit of the silicone/plastic? If so she’d probably be fine.

I wouldn’t think surgery to remove a foreign object would be classed as an ongoing/pre existing condition so it would be a good idea to Give your insurance a call to see if it would be covered.

DoIneed1 · 16/07/2020 09:09

First of all, don't panuc. Take her to the vet and get advice.

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 09:11

I know she wont be fine because it's happened before and would have died, shes a very small kitten only 6 months old.
Last time it got into her intestines.

as long as the vet says foreign object its not the same thing at all

Go yo the vets for an xray?

How is she not chewing it?

BrokenBrit · 16/07/2020 09:13

Hand hold OP.
Call your vet and deal with it one step at a time.
It’s not a preexisting condition so I can’t see that your insurance company won’t pay.
Good luck hope kitty is ok.

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 09:15

I tried to get insurance when it all happened and it didn't go through properly so only got insurance about two days ago when I realised. It does say she will be covered for injuries but I'm just so scared she wont be as we cant afford anything at the moment.
It also says that due to her history some things may not be covered but doesn't say what.
I'm an absolute mess right now, I'm so gutted I might have to give her away

I'm praying she has chewed it and not swallowed it like last time, shes an amazing cat but an absolute idiot

BrokenBrit · 16/07/2020 09:18

In the nicest possible way you need to stop thinking about giving her away right now and call the vet and deal with the current situation.

MrMeSeeks · 16/07/2020 09:20

Right now you need to think about the cat! When did she do this??
You need to get her to the vet no matter what.

Oldestchild90s · 16/07/2020 09:21

Surely you're the idiot if she keeps getting hold of them? Or is she just amazing at opening cupboards and helping herself to what she wants? Poor thing.

NoRoomInBed · 16/07/2020 09:23

Call the vet. Get her sorted. See if the vet will do a payment plan. Call insurance and ask if it will be covered. You have options. My cat eats plastic bags and has been through this too. You do get into the habit of keeping things out the way.

CockCarousel · 16/07/2020 09:25

Ring your vets - even if your insurance won't cover it, the vet will usually work out a payment plan for you. Failing that, contact the PDSA.

Luckypoppy · 16/07/2020 09:30

Get her to the vets and worry about the rest later. She could be seriously ill. XxX sorry to be harsh.

Myneighboursnorlax · 16/07/2020 09:36

If you only got insurance two days ago then it likely won’t be covered. Not because it’s a pre-existing condition, as foreign bodies aren’t normally, but because most insurance policies have a 7 day period in which you cannot claim. This is to stop people taking out insurance as soon as they realise their pet is ill.

Like previous posters said, the most important thing right now though is to contact your vet.

EachandEveryone · 16/07/2020 09:43

Can you phone the PDSA if you fall into their catchment

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 09:47

I have of course booked an appointment at the vets wont know anything till then.
I am completely blaming myself I know I'm an idiot and dont need to be told so.

She has also never gone for dummies but have been very careful, clearly not enough. She would normally only go for the bottles as they have milk on them.
I will let you all know how it goes.

OP posts:
WeAllHaveWings · 16/07/2020 10:14

How long since she chewed it?

Kittykat93 · 16/07/2020 10:59

Why are you going to give her away? Because she's chewed a dummy? Hope she's okay but really just be more careful keeping things out the way... Not saying you're an idiot at all but you keep talking about giving the cat away and that seems extreme and not very fair to the poor animal.

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 10:59

They are trying to make her throw up now, has been about 2 hours

OP posts:
fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 11:01

To be honest I just panicked and thinking I'm a terrible owner for letting this happen.
Shes family and we all love her and I've decided it's time for no dummies and will deal with the moodiness so then shes definitely safe

Your account of events regarding the insurance are jumbled and don't make much sense. How can you not realise you didn't have insurance? You (hopefully) wouldn't drive a car without being certain that you were covered.

If you took your insurance out 2 days ago, this will not be covered. Hopefully they can make her sick and she brings it back up although it is a lot more difficult to induce vomiting in cats than it is in dogs.

Failing that, depending on the size (a dummy is smaller than a teat) and the fact she's probably bigger now (how old was she the first time round?), hopefully it won't cause an obstruction. If they do take a wait and see approach, you will need to be on poo watch until it comes out. I've known foreign bodies to be bouncing around in an animals stomach for years without any signs before they suddenly work their way into the intestine and cause an obstruction

Oldestchild90s · 16/07/2020 11:39

'Will deal with the moodiness' ??!
You're not really selling it well are you 🤦🏼‍♀️ i don't mean to be rude but you've said your poor kitten is an idiot and you'll have to deal with moodiness as you will hide all dummies.

Praying to god this bloody poor kitty is ok!

Haretodaygonetomorrow · 16/07/2020 11:52

Well done for getting her to the vet. Hopefully they can make her bring it up. You will get in the habit of keeping things out her way, but getting rid of the dummies completely is a good idea too. It’s good that you have insurance for the future.

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 16/07/2020 11:55

What on earth are you talking about not selling it well, of course my kid will be moody for a bit and it's about time to wean him off anyway.
Shes getting the help she needs it was never the case that she wouldn't.
