80 pouches in 8 days. Is there a better way?

Prior to lockdown we started getting visits from a new boy. As cats do, he decided my youngest was his human and after months of his squirting antics he had the little operation and officially unpacked his luggage. This has brought the feline head count to 4. New boy is a long leggy muscular young cat with an appetite to match our very middle aged old boy who given half a chance behaves like a waste disposal unit. The other two are as and when with food. We've alway bought packs of 40 pouches from either Costco, bookers, or the supermarkets when they have them and we're going through two of these in 8 days. Is there honestly a more economical (short of getting rid of cats) way to do this? With cans half the glaring will turn their noses up if its been in the fridge and cans only seem to be in one flavour bulk buying wise. I'm wondering if it's going to be more economical (possibly nutritionally better?) to roast cheap chickens for them and pad out with rice or something? Ideas appreciated.

I get the 96 packs from zooplus. They also are cheaper for large packs of dry iams. Have a look on the website. They sometimes have really good offers and then I bulk buy.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 15/07/2020 11:28

Can't help I'm afraid - our four get through 8-10 Felix sachets a day (Costco again) so we are not too far behind you.

The joys of active cats...

NinkasiNinjaPaws · 15/07/2020 13:06

Might have to checkout zooplus then. Himself witters about the ecological impact of all the pouches, but in all honesty I don't know how you'd get around that short of making your own cat food.
New boy certainly knows how to be active, he like a furry torpedo at the sight of a fly. How long he maintains his slinky proportions now he's neutered and discovered all the cat beds/towers that the others ignore is anyone's guess 😆

Am I misreading your post or are you saying that you've stolen someone's cat?

drspouse · 15/07/2020 13:15

Tins? Easier to recycle at least. DCat goes through 1 tin in 5 days plus dry food.

drspouse · 15/07/2020 13:16

(Dry food in card or paper).

raffle · 15/07/2020 13:18

Whose cat is it tho?

DoIneed1 · 15/07/2020 13:22

I don't understand half of the Op's post 🙄

Thornhill58 · 15/07/2020 13:28

Do some dry food too. Good for their teeth too. Making your own will be cheaper too.

Justkeeprollingalong · 15/07/2020 13:31

So you've lured someone's cat by feeding them?

KingOfDogShite · 15/07/2020 13:32

Feed them tins and kibble. Pouches are an environmental disaster.

Gordonzolas · 15/07/2020 13:36

Am I misreading your post or are you saying that you've stolen someone's cat?

Grin that’s what I read.

And then had the poor bastard neutered.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 15/07/2020 13:37

I don't understand your post at all! So have you stolen/borrowed someone elses cat?

What does he had the little operation and officially unpacked his luggage mean, that he had the snip (or whatever the cat equivilent is?). How does this then bring the headcount to 4?

Im not being pedantic Im just curious as to what has happened?

Watto1 · 15/07/2020 13:40

With four cats, surely you’d use the whole can in one go so it wouldn’t need to go in the fridge? Tins are far more economical and better for the environment.

Ducksarenotmyfriends · 15/07/2020 13:44

Try tetrapaks like bozita or something from zooplus. They're smaller than cans but bigger than pouches so for 4 cats you'd empty it all out in one rather than have to store it in fridge (mine also turn their noses up at fridge food!). You can recycle them too.

Howzaboutye · 15/07/2020 13:49

Cat food has supplements in it that they need.

And what on earth do you actually mean? Plain English please- did you adopt the cat and had him neutered?

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 15/07/2020 13:49

Is that a waffly way of saying you have nicked someone's cat?

spinningaround72 · 15/07/2020 13:50

Have you tried switching to a higher calorie food for active cats? They should go through less of that. We also bulk our cat food out with biscuits they can graze on through out the day

QueenCT · 15/07/2020 13:53

You could try butchers choice in tins, that's decent. Or even go raw fed

QueenCT · 15/07/2020 13:53

Butchers classic even!

Carpetdweller · 15/07/2020 13:57

Tins, they only need one flavour, or buy two different bulk packs. With four cats you won't need to put a tin in the fridge.

RaisinGhost · 15/07/2020 13:59

You can't just roast supermarket chickens as nutrient wise cats can't just eat muscle meat alone - they need organs too. That's way too many pouches imo, I'd switch to dry. Or tins - with 4 cats it would be 1 tin per day surely, wouldn't need to go in to the fridge.

3cats · 15/07/2020 13:59

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Is that a waffly way of saying you have nicked someone's cat?
I think so too.

I don't get why people do this. Somewhere there is a heartbroken family worried sick about their cat. People can be such selfish dicks. And, no, cats don't get to choose where they live. They have owners. If you don't feed him, he'd go home.

KingOfDogShite · 15/07/2020 14:03

We use half a tin morning and evening for our two cats. I never put the tin in the fridge between feedings just put a tin lid on it and put it in the cupboard.

gutentag1 · 15/07/2020 14:06

If he was outside unneutered then he was either a stray or had an irresponsible owner who doesn't deserve pets. Either way the OP has rescued him IMO.
