Kitten litter tray set up

Hi, I’ve got myself confused about the whole litter tray situation.

What litter is best, clumping/non clumping/wood pellets?

Do you use liners?

How often do you empty and replace the litter?

I got non clumping litter and I scoop out the poo as soon as it’s there and empty the entire thing out every morning and replace the litter. Google is telling me you only need to replace the litter every week. Do people leave the wee in there to build up? Does it smell? I also used liners but kitten is just ripping them up so trying without today.

How do you do it?

don't think clumping is recommended for kittens unless its eco clumping stuff (I.e. not clay based). When I used non clumping I scooped poo whenever I saw it and then cleaned the whole thing every few days. With clumping you can remove poo and pee and it needs cleaning out less often

I used to scoop as soon as it was needed and wipe any soiled areas. Never used liners because they just get torn.

Thank you both. Am interested in clumping but will have to wait for her to not be a kitten I guess.

Fluffy, you scoop out the wee litter also? I only have a slotted scoop thing so it didn’t work when I tried!

We use agri select wood pellets which are £5.99 for 30 litres. Our girl very rarely uses it now as she goes outside but it is so much cleaner and easier to clean than grit type litter.

You need a children’s spade from a bucket and spade set Wink

I use the corn clumping litter from zooplus, it’s amazing. No smell at all, just scoop out the poo and the clumps every day, complete change every week or so. I’ve used it since mine was a baby and he’s been fine. I have 3 litter trays in different parts of the house for one indoor cat. No liners.

Try a garden trowel instead of a rake/scoop thing. My older cats use newspaper in a litter tray so it gets throughly cleaned after every use. The kittens have cheap cat litter- it gets emptied and completely replaced once or twice a day.
No liners - that’s just a reason for a cat to dig even deeper!

Clumping litter can be dangerous for kittens as they can eat and then it swells in their stomachs.

I used wood pellets and scooped out every pop but not the wee. It didn’t smell. Changed it when it got a bit ‘sawdust-y’ (once or twice a week). His Lordship goes outdoors now and rarely uses litter tray (still wood pellets) so it gets changed every few weeks.

Thank you all. I’ve put a tray of the wood litter out to see how it goes but she is yet to use it opting for the clay litter instead. I have also repurposed ds spade.

Witnessed kitten eating some litter earlier so will stay away from clumping until she is a bit older.

I’m leaning towards buying the cheapest litter and replacing it everyday and hoping she uses the outside in the future.
