Cat insurance for 14 year old cat

Hello, my lovely cat is about 14, seems healthy though I have her annual check up and vaccination coming up.
Last November she had radiation therapy for her thyroid which was v expensive but we could claim all but excess on insurance. She was on Medication for 2 years before that for the same issue so very glad we had insurance.

Our insurance with John Lewis is now £120 a month though (lifetime cover and does cover pre-existing conditions) and even the vet agrees that is insane. I have been paying it for peace of mind.

I planned to cancel the insurance once we got another all clear from her latest bloods but now will be moving house and savings we have accumulated will go into that so if anything comes up we won't have much spare.

Ideally we would have a pot of money and put our £120 a month into that to keep building but I am worried we are too tied in.

A quote from bought by many covers pre-existing conditions that ceased 2 years ago - obviously hers is more recent than that, and it's still £78 a month.

I won't make a decision until after we are moved and she has settled and we've had the latest all clear from the vet. But what would you do? Thanks!

My 13 year old had the same November/December 2018. I was pregnant at the time so she had to be boarded for 6 weeks too, all covered by the insurance. I’m with Petplan (have been for her entire life) and monthly payment was £29 pm when she was diagnosed, rising to £35 pm after treatment, just got this years schedule and is now £38 a month. I’ve claimed about 6 times in total and I’m still in ‘credit’ even with the 20% treatment contribution. I can recommend them if they’ll let you switch, never waiting more than a week to be reimbursed. For big treatments like the thyroid they paid the thyroid centre directly.

If my premiums went above £60 a month I would be putting the money into a pot instead.

My insurance is the same, it's well over £100 a month after she also had radioactive iodine last year. It was brilliant treatment but Bluebell is 19 now and I'm afraid to cancel the insurance. The last round of blood tests cost £400 and she now has kidney disease 2.

Thank you @Littlegoth and @madcatladyforever - I will look into petplan. The treatment is amazing, isn't it- just so expensive! I have been outraged at how JL have just put the premium up so much year on year ...

Bought By Many has a policy specifically for pre-existing conditions, which only excludes the last 3 months, and not 2 years. (I think their standard policies will exclude the last 2 years.) Is that the one you got a quote for?

Thanks @AnotherEmma I think I must have misread the terms, that's better news as it would cover her!x

I thought my Tesco premium of £75 a month was bad enough, but £120
Is ridiculous. And we've run up
Bills of £21k!

oliveroses · 06/07/2020 21:34

@Toddlerteaplease glad you said that, sometimes I need reminding how mad it is!

Wow! That's a lot of money for pet insurance. We don't have our older cats insured we simply can't afford it. We pay for standard treatments but if anything awful we're to occur then I'm afraid as much as we love them we just couldn't possibly afford thousands of pounds to treat.
