New kitten with diarrhoea

We got a kitten nine days ago, and he developed diarrhoea on Wednesday night. We were feeding him the same food the breeder said they’d been feeding him. We already had a vet appointment for his first vaccinations etc on Friday, but I called Thursday morning to see if they thought they should see him straight away - they said if there’s no blood in his diarrhoea and he’s eating and not lethargic, it was fine to wait. The vet saw him on Friday, we agreed to postpone vaccinations for a week, and in the meantime the vet has given us some special easily digested gastrointestinal-friendly food and some probiotic gel. He LOVES the food and is gobbling it down, and he’s still full of beans, BUT he still has diarrhoea. Does anyone know how quickly I should expect it to clear up now he’s on the special food? At what stage should I get (more) worried?

I was worried about feline enteritis but on reading up about it, I think he’d have been a lot more sick a lot faster.

We also have two adult cats, fully vaccinated. We’re keeping them apart at the moment but obviously he can smell them.

Good to hear OP, happy litter trays from now on. Sorry to hear about your daughter’s kitten, Riv, I hope the vet gets to the bottom of it.

NewKittyMeow · 08/07/2020 21:38

He’s really settled in well - completely taken over our lives and sleeps curled in a furry ball on my pillow every night! He’s back to one or two poos a day as well, instead of a horrible puddle every four hours.

Sorry to hear your daughter’s kitten isn’t recovering yet, @Riv12345. My kitten’s diarrhoea resolved within 24 hours of us using the worm stuff. It was Profender spot on stuff - what did your vet prescribe? What has she said this time? Did you say your kitten is having the same special kitten food?

Hi op thank you for replying

He's been started on Panacur
Once a day
He is pooping really pooping loads come out like water
Still waiting for stool result to come back from vets
I was round daughters earlier
He went loads of times
He's such a good boy he go straight to his tray.
Rang vet and said his stool still very runny.
She said it's normal with the worm med
Hmmm I'm not sure
Talking about doing bloods I just want that little boy to be ok

NewKittyMeow · 09/07/2020 15:50

Oh poor little love. My vet did say worming medicine can upset their tummies... I hope the tests show something quickly, and they can treat him. I hope he's drinking plenty? There's rehydration stuff the vet can prescribe as well.

Yeah I got him a water fountain he loves it

He already been seen by vet for fluids

But he is a lot brighter to be honest
The place where we got him from said he was 12 weeks but vet reacon he is about 8 at the most
Breaks my heart

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/07/2020 17:00

Oh dear. Is he on plain boiled chicken breast?. I fed mine on it when he was a kitten because he was intolerant to cereals & he was being sick then having diarrhoea.

I honestly thought he was going to die one night.

Riv12345 · 09/07/2020 17:12

No he hasn't had chicken yet, but I did think of advising my daughter to start him on it for a while

He was ok when she got him
Then he went in the garden for a little sniff around
She has an older cat which hasn't been wormed
I keep thinking has he picked something up from the older cat or maybe the feaces of the older cat

As soon as she got him he had a health check and his vaccinations
All fine.....but vet did mention he is very small for 12 weeks!
Which I noticed he was tiny too

I will definitely mention the chicken
Thank you so much for your messages I so appreciate it x

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/07/2020 17:49

The boiling process helps get water into the chicken, you can also add boiled water to his food so he doesn’t get as dehydrated. Cats have a low thirst drive compared to us.

Hopefully his stool sample will throw some light onto it.

Chemenger · 09/07/2020 18:53

I usually get chicken fillets, so the pieces are quite thin. They cook in just a few minutes (2or 3) in boiling water. Then chop them up into small pieces, mix with a little bit of the poaching water and serve. Don’t overcook or it goes dry and tough. Keeps in the fridge for a couple of days. Usually they love chicken, but my last foster wasn’t interested for some reason best known to himself.

NewKittyMeow · 09/07/2020 20:05

Great idea to try him on the chicken - she should also worm her other cats ASAP and keep him inside and away from them. Is he vomiting? Have they had their vaccinations? I don’t want to worry you but there’s a virus called feline enteritis that can be serious in kittens and is very contagious. That’s what I was worried about with my little one.

He's had his vaccinations

I think she should worm the older cat
He's not vomiting
She texted last night saying he's diarrhoea has settled
It's the last day on his meds today

Fingers crossed
He is much more alert and the vets done seem to worried
As long as he's still eating and drinking
Which he is loads
Let's see what the next few days bring
Hopefully the stool sample will be back soon

Put it this way he's going the right way at the moment
I will keep you updated
Thank you so much for advice x

NewKittyMeow · 10/07/2020 08:15

Ah so glad to hear he’s on the mend! It’s so scary when they’re tiny. The worm their way into your heart so quickly!

Update on kitten.

A few days later he passed a stool with looked like boiled rice.

I understand that is was worms actually coming out.
Since then he is back to normal!!
Running around and playing.
I'm so glad he's over this.
Plus his stool sample came back negative

Thank you everyone

I'm one happy nanna 😂😂

Yep that’s worms! Poor little soul. Worming will take place religiously after seeing that won’t it?.

Riv12345 · 15/07/2020 08:05

Yeah he's being started on a wormer and flea treatment prescribed by vet which last 3 months
Which he will take every 3 months
Also the older cat as well
I think that has taught her a lesson !!
