Dcat got chased up a tree by a deer!!

Don't know why I'm posting but I'm just so shocked! We live in a smallish village, big garden, lots of big rhododendrons, backs onto woodland, (muntjac) deer frequently eating my feckin plants milling around the garden. DH observed last week we currently have a resident mummy deer with a tiny fawn, yesterday DH is out front mowing lawn when opposite neighbour says 'do you have a cat?' Dh says err yeah why? (Expecting complaint as she is a mardy cow) she says is it that one? Points to dcat about 40 foot up tree overhanging the road! Whilst trying to call her down DH spots mummy and fawn in bushes under the tree where cat is.

Long story short, DH gets ladder, not long enough, but frightens cat higher up the tree Hmm, lovely opposite neighbour gets mega long ladder but can't get hold of her but he sort of pushes her down the tree and she runs/ falls down tree (I couldn't look) DH replays cctv and we see dcat meandering around front garden probably having a poo until suddenly mummy deer appears at 100 mph chasing dcat, she flees up tree trunk and then gradually climbs higher to get to a branch which is about 40 foot up! Called vet said keep her in and keep an eye on her. She was very subdued and sleepy last night and had a slight limp by bedtime but this morning seems totally fine. Poor baby I hope she won't be too frightened to go in the front garden again - must admit it's made me more wary! Dcat is 15 btw - another one of her 9 lives gone!

Impressive for a 15yo though. They usually come down on their own but if it’s over a rd I can see why you’d want her down sooner rather than later. I couldn’t have looked either.

The baby was probably bigger than your cat.

I would use liquid catnip spray on the tree bark, about 1m off the ground. Probably the cat would have come down the tree quickly if she loves catnip.

At least she's fine which is good news!

The fawn is actually quite similar to dcat in size - like a big guinea pig, dcat is very small herself, it's very cute. I just hadn't realised the mum would be so aggressive defending it, they normally just scarper if we disturb them. This is what spider cat thinks about the whole thing now ....

I am so jealous you have deer and fawns wandering around your neighbourhood.
I used to live in a residential area where there were some muntjac deer, but rarely saw them, just heard them at night calling to each other.

iknowimcoming · 03/07/2020 09:43

@googledontknow they are indeed lovely to watch, although regularly wake us up at night barking and they eat a lot of pretty plants! Dh is currently constructing a veg patch with a 6 foot high fence all the way round it because otherwise they'll eat everything!

What an ordeal. Hope all"s well now. Suggest to your DH that he provides a veggie patch for the deer, just like Chunk's on youtubeGrin

googledontknow · 03/07/2020 20:35

Yeah, it's not the nicest of sounds, but better than foxes mating that's for sure!

TheSpottedZebra · 03/07/2020 20:44

Deer can get REALLY tetchy if you get too close to their young.
Poor cat - that's at least 76 in human years!
