Do your Bengal cats go out?

Onefootinthegravy2020 · 24/06/2020 15:09

Hi all I've been absent from mumsnet for about 10 years so be gentle with me!

We've recently got 2 Bengal Kittens they are about 18 weeks old now. I've had cats all my life and we already owned 2 half Bengals who have been out and about.

I will be letting them out, they obviously will be chipped, neutered and will have their vaccinations etc

So many people seem to keep them as indoor cats, my two are just crazy and I don't see that being an option for us to be honest. I realise there is a risk they may get stolen but how common is this?

Just wondering how others have got on?

I would love a Bengal! Unfortunately our last cat got killed on the road, so the next cat we have will be in a huge garden enclosure, I couldn't go through that again 😪

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/06/2020 08:30

Which breeder did you use Op?.

pickingdaisies · 25/06/2020 08:41

There's a Bengal cat in my street. All the other cats, and some dogs, have chunks missing and are terrified.

user69 · 25/06/2020 08:54

@Chartsandgraphs

They tend to cause huge problems if you have neighbours. We had one that was determine to kill our small cat and many other neighbourhood cats. It would come in the house and attack our cat. Another mother eventually had enough and drown it. I wouldn't let them out.
Someone drowned someone else's cat?
Chartsandgraphs · 25/06/2020 09:51

@user69 They did. It wasn't very nice but it was attacking everyone's cats relentlessly and viciously. It was coming in windows and spring out from people's sofas to get at their cats and people's kids had been attacked trying to save their own cats in their own homes. The owners just didn't care. Finally one mother just had it and drown it in the bath. It was brutal. I don't condone what she did but nor do I think Bengal's should be allowed outside.

bluebluezoo · 25/06/2020 13:14

Jesus christ @Chartsandgraphs.

Is this in the uk? I don’t care how awful the animal was, there are more humane ways than drowning. That’s barbaric and i would have reported them to the RSPCA for animal cruelty.

Chartsandgraphs · 25/06/2020 13:29

@user69 It was in a very leafy bit of North London.

That's awful, if any of my neighbours touched our boy they'd long for the days it was just him bothering them.

I have a Bengal and an Abbysinian and a cat-proofed back garden. It took about a week to do from a kit, lots of netting you have set at a 45 degree angle around all the fences and walls. The Bengal can get through the tiniest of gaps though. We also have to keep the front windows closed and be very careful not to her out the front door as she's a bit of an escapologist. She never goes far if she gets out but tells us off for letting her escape for ages afterwards.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/06/2020 21:40

You can get window screens from flat cats, some people on here use them,

Sorry about the repeat posting of my photos, it kept saying it had failed on the app but they had posted Blush

You’re neighbours won’t thank you letting Bengal cats out. They really are designed to be indoor cats and will be constantly in fights with other cats and bringing wildlife home. Did the breeder not explain this to you?

They aren’t “designed” to be indoor cats at all.

And that’s the problem. There are reasons they are indoor cats- asb, theft, value etc, but their natural instinct is toward very large territory with few other cats. Which is why they generally don’t do well indoor, or in urban/suburban areas.

An enclosed garden is a good compromise. But they are difficult cats which is why you can find them up for rehoming very easily.

LesbianMummies · 28/06/2020 18:32

Granted they aren’t designed to be pets if you want to get technical but those who do decide to keep them as pets shouldn’t be allowing them to free roam and terrorise the neighbourhood. Look at how many adolescent Bengals are in rescue because they are out of control.

MistyIsland · 28/06/2020 18:46

No my boy doesn’t go out, (if he does he’s on his lead) he’d either be stolen or run over as he’s not overly street smart (ex breeding stud cat) he mainly spends most of his life trying to get me to sit down so he can sleep on my lap.

Beautiful kittens @Onefootinthegravy2020 😻😻
