Best food for kittens

Hello,
Looking for recommendations on the best kitten foods please? Only had him a few days and he’s on Whiskas atm because that’s what he was on when we got him, but I’m looking to change him onto a better quality product. We tried a little pack of the Lily’s Kitchen kitten food and he loved it, but I’m dubious now after reading they’re now owned by Purina (Nestle). Also, is ‘grain free’ the best way to go with the dry food? Thanks!

When we got our first kitten, he had awful stomach problems. He had to go to the vets a few times and they told us it was the food the previous owners had fed him. I'd read that you were supposed to wean them off their old food and gradually mix in the food you wanted to feed them until they were at 100% new food. However, the vet told us it would be better just to switch him straight on to the new food. We used hills science plan and he loved it. He had the kitten one at first and then the regular one. We used it for years now and our other cats have it and love it too. We don't feed them any wet cat food at all. Instead they have tins of tuna or sardines in spring water and whenever we cooked chicken or beef, they get some too. I feel that their coats are so healthy looking and I'm sure it's what they eat! 🥰

Mine were being fed on a mix of whiskas, royal canin and fresh chicken/fish. The whiskas made their poo really vile so we were keen to get them onto something else.
They lost enthusiasm for the Royal canin despite the vet saying it was good. They are mostly on nature's menu wet food and James Wellbeloved dry food. Plus fresh fish and some tins/pouches of brands like Applaws and Encore (but my kittens are nearly 11 months old now).
One kitten/cat barely touches wet food now and prefers dry, including our older cats food whereas the other loves wet food.
I have been wondering when I can drop the kitten food entirely.

if you want good food look for the ones that have named meat products like beef chicken or lamb they are the better quality

I get mine from zooplus bulk buy.The dry i store in a cereal container and gaffa tape the big bag.

Zooplus is a good site. Mine are eating Purizon at the moment too.
I tried them on Carney and they didn't like it and Bozita which they loved for a while.
It's a well priced shop for cat trees and posts too.
Better quality food generally has a higher proportion of meat. Some cats don't tolerate grains either so prefer a grain free food.

Grain free is better as cats are obligate carnivores. Mine eat encore and thrive dry which have a high meat content. They eat a few different wet foods. I agree zooplus is good for cat related items

I am getting 2 kittens and have been told by my breeder that Thrive is a complete food.

dementedpixie · 22/06/2020 17:04

Thrive dry is a complete food. I don't think thrive wet is complete - check the tin as some is only complementary

dementedpixie · 22/06/2020 17:06

It looks like thrive does do complete wet food. Some wet foods are not complete so so check the labels

Thank you everyone! All very helpful 👍🏻
