Has anyone got any advice on how to stop a cat jumping up onto sides in the kitchen and lounge?!

Aluminium foil?

madcatladyforever · 14/06/2020 20:11

Haha good luck with that. My cat has stopped doing it only recently at 19 but only because she can't jump anymore.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/06/2020 20:12

No.

madcatladyforever · 14/06/2020 20:16

This one's even better Grin

Jaxhog · 14/06/2020 21:46

When you find a solution, I'd like to know too. Mine ignore the foil.

dementedpixie · 14/06/2020 21:47

You teach them to do it when you aren't watching Grin. They do what they want tbh

MashedPotatoBrainz · 14/06/2020 21:48

Water pistol. They very quickly learn to only doing it when you're not looking.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/06/2020 21:49

One of mine was on the bench irritating me yesterday, I said to her, 'DOWN".
She lay downGrin

Toddlerteaplease · 14/06/2020 21:51

Swap them for a Persian. They don't jump that high!

Longdistance · 14/06/2020 21:52

They have to be taught as a kitten not to do that. My cat never went on work surfaces and neither did my mums. Again, taught from kitten hood.

midwestsummer · 14/06/2020 21:57

We used a water mister when a kitten.
He has only just started again at the age of 15.

They definitely learn never to go on work surfaces when you're around.

Mine forgot once - the look on her face when she realised her mistake Grin

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 22:02

Nope.

The only way is to keep them out of the room. Mine weren't allowed on the work surfaces - when I got home I would hear a telltale "kathump" as they jumped off 😂

Redbrownbrick · 14/06/2020 22:04

Mine has never tried with the kitchen work surfaces - I presume he was taught as a kitten (got him as an adult rescue).

With the tables in the living room he gets shouted at whenever he tries - he now knows he's not supposed to and doesn't try very often -unless DP is eating chicken

Ladybyrd · 14/06/2020 22:09

I've had 4 cats and this is the first to do it. I'm not a fan at all.

I tell him off and he gets down, but walk away and he's back up. Might have to go with the water spray if it carries on.

Longdistance · 14/06/2020 22:10

No, never caught any of the cats on work surfaces. They never went on the sofas or coffee tables or dining room tables and chairs.
No cat flaps on our houses as they were never needed, mum was at home, I worked shifts.
The only time my mums cat destroyed any furniture was when she started going mad at my mums leg on the sofa. Mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer not long after. Cilla would follow mum everywhere, she was a little timid legend 😻

Soontobe60 · 14/06/2020 22:12

We have a water bottle and squirted the cats if they even looked at the worktops. Sorted it in about 3 days.

JacobReesMogadishu · 14/06/2020 22:13

Parcel tape, sticky side up. A few days of it and every cat I’ve had has stopped with the jumping up.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/06/2020 22:14

I think Jackson Galaxy advises providing something higher for them to sit on.

So, a cat tree or a cat shelf higher than the work tops.

I always wipe down before cooking anyway so it made no odds to me if he’d been up there or not.

LadyFeliciaMontague · 15/06/2020 06:59

I just shouted at her to get down. She understood pretty quickly.
She knows not to go on kitchen counters or the dining table but she can walk on the living room window sills & fireplace

leolion1 · 15/06/2020 07:09

I was going to say a firm 'no' when they do it soon teaches them not to jump up, as mine now never goes on work surfaces however after reading the replies I'm wondering if this is only when I'm not watching Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/06/2020 07:33

There was someone on here whose cat didn’t go up when she was there but would come home most days to the cat sitting on the kitchen windowsill waiting for her car.

Down by the time she got in the house.

autumnboys · 15/06/2020 07:41

Obviously accidentally, mine put his paw on a still-hot hob ring when my back was turned - first time he’d ever jumped up. Sad That, plus me holding his paw under cold water for five minutes before I called the vet, seems to have put him off for life. However, he’s also not interested in human food at all, which I think also has something to do with it.

madcatladyforever · 16/06/2020 17:17

My 19 year old cat bellows for me to lift her up onto the kitchen surfaces so she can see what I'm up to because she can't jump any more.
I just can't say no because I'm too soft Grin
