New kitten food advice

Any help appreciated!

We are getting our first kitten this Friday and have been busy kitty proofing the house, buying cat beds, bowls etc.

Just stuck on one thing..
The lady we are getting the kitten from says she feeds her KiteKat for kittens but cannot find it anywhere..! Obviously she will need continuity and don't want to change her food suddenly and make this transition harder than it has to be for her. What can we do?

Oh lord that used to be so popular. The only place I’ve seen kitekat is homebargains.

Have you tried amazon.

Tavannach · 14/06/2020 18:07

Don't know where to get Kitekat but the other thing you can do to help the kitten settle is to keep her in one room if possible for a few days while she acclimatises to you and her new home.

lockdown2232 · 14/06/2020 20:04

Have tried amazon but they only seem to have kitekat for adults and can't find the kitten know anywhere! We pick her up Friday morning so I feel like we're running out of time! Every site we have found simply does adult kitekat and not one for kittens. Part of me feels like it just doesn't exist anymore!

Any recommendation of what we can feed her? I feel horrible we won't be able to give her the food she is used to.

Have you asked the lady where she buys it? Maybe they could give you some for the first few days

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/06/2020 20:14

Maybe it doesn’t exist and just tells people their on kitten food?.

Tavannach · 14/06/2020 21:48

Our kitten is happily eating felix kitten food and go cat for kittens biscuits. She was 9 weeks when she arrived. She supped a little kitten milk the day she arrived but hasn't touched it since. She drinks water from a bowl, and that seemed to be a new experience for her. Having done a little reading I'll be swapping the go cat for applaws. Pricier but a higher protein content.

Hi OP, ooh, a new kitten, gorgeous!

We've had a few kittens over the years, and in each case the seller/mum-cat-owner has given us a little bag of the kitten's current food. Just contact the lady first so she has that ready for you - you won't need much.

You can then mix a bit of that in with whatever food you want to use - make sure it's one you can get easily - gradually increasing the new food and decreasing the KiteKat over a few days. As Tavannach said, Applaws is good, and we've also used Hills and Purina Pro Plan.

Remember to leave her food, water bowl and litter tray in easy reach of a hiding place for the first couple of nights. Some kittens are really bold from the start, but most will hide under something, so you'll want to leave the 'necessities' in easy reach so she doesn't feel too exposed.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing a photo once she's settled in.

Thanks for the help!

Yes I think we will ask for some current food - good idea and then slowly mix in with something more easily available!

We're planning on having the dining room/open plan kitchen as her room, less traffic on the dining room side, nice spacious corner to settle in etc. Food bowls on the other side, spaced away from the water bowl (from the advice I've found online). I don't have children so obviously I can not compare at all but I feel like I'm getting ready to being a teeny tiny little fur baby!

I'm the same OP - no children either but we now have a menagerie of pets (we just started out with one kitten too. Just sayin' 😉).

I remember the day after we got our first DKitten, Oscar, DH and I were absolutely terrified about the responsibility we'd taken on, and DH looked at me with such a serious, worried face and said "I've never been so anxious in all my life, this MUST be worse than having kids" 😂

Can't have been that bad though, we could probably sell tickets for people to come and visit our 'zoo' now!

WaitingForSeptember · 15/06/2020 09:09

Zooplus sell it. I always use them for cat food and litter because the prices are reasonable and I don't need to lug heavy bags from the shop.

If you PM me I can give you a referral code for 10% off.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2020 09:14

I don't think kitekat does kitten food. I've seen cans of adult stuff in the supermarket so maybe they are using them. Its not great tbb

lockdown2232 · 15/06/2020 20:22

@CarrieMoonbeams we've had the same conversation too, me and DH both feel like we're finally growing up now having to be responsible for someone other than ourselves! I am feeling anxious slightly but very excited! We get to pick her up Friday morning, she's so teeny tiny petite. I'm not maternal at all but oh my god I already love her!

@lockdown2232. I'm so excited for you! We have 'no room at the inn' now but I'd love another kitten.

Just brace yourself for the heart-stopping panic you'll feel when you get up on Saturday morning and you can't find her - they seldom sleep where you expect them to!

Dying to see photos of her when you can get her to stay still for long enough. Give her a kiss from her Aunty Carrie on Friday x
