She keeps getting fatter!!!!

Rosie is a very plump puss. She is on a diet but keeps putting on weight!! She is now 8 and she is spayed.
Does anyone have any advice?! I'm really not sure who I'm doing and obviously the vet isn't seeing non urgent cases. She was fed go cat but I changed her on to crave as it seemed to be nutritionally better.
She weights a shocking 12lb. She's on 50 grams a day (packet says 60 for Maintaince).
She is a fearsome hunter though and removes bells and collars which is unhelpful!

ANY advice gladly received - we've never had a fat cat before!!

I think she needs blood tests to check if there is a thyroid issue or other problem. Hopefully vets will be able to start doing more routine work soon; mine have written about started to do annual boosters etc soon.

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 13/06/2020 14:50

Oh thank you @SunbathingDragon, I hadn't actually considered that.

Dry food is apparently the worst for weight gain - as it encourages nibbling, or something ...

I would try her on something she doesn't particularly like - just Butchers Classic cans for example (which happen to be the healthiest of the canned stuff). I bet she'll start to lose weight then (but she might also hate you.)

slipperywhensparticus · 13/06/2020 14:56

Is she eating elsewhere?

You can get diet biscuits which you can feed her more for less weight gain

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/06/2020 14:57

Could you up her play time too?.

It’s so hard to see their little faces looking at you pleadingly too.

SunbathingDragon · 13/06/2020 14:58

My cat has a thyroid problem and it appears to be surprising common in felines.

Myneighboursnorlax · 13/06/2020 15:00

Could she be being fed by a neighbour? Cats are very good at getting second dinners, and third dinners... by going round to well-meaning neighbours and giving them the “I’m starving and no one loves me” eyes.

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 13/06/2020 15:00

@Fluffycloudland77 ha! She doesn't so much look up at you pleadingly as bite your feet!!
It takes courage to put Rosie puss on a diet - she is a fearsome feline!

Thank you all I'll look into that. She is a great one for nibbling.

I suspect she eats elsewhere too. I've resorted to putting posts on the local Facebook pages!!!

She's soo adorable!! Sorry, no advice here, I struggle too with my own two fatties. Trying to reduce dry food as much as I can but It's hard...I'm a completely doormat when it comes to them

babychange12 · 13/06/2020 15:27

Haha we have a fatty as well
Our vet told us he was obese Blush
We've put him on a diet but like you said, it's a miserable existence for everyone!!

LuckyKitty13 · 13/06/2020 15:42

Thyroid disease in cats causes weight loss, not weight gain. So it will not be thyroid disease.

WithASpider · 13/06/2020 16:21

Our vet recommended Purina Obesity Management dry food for our hefty miss (6.5kg, about 13lb).

We weigh out 80g a day, and she gets it in 3 meals. She's not hungry on it, and she's losing weight slowly.

If we left dry food out she'd graze for hours!

SunbathingDragon · 13/06/2020 17:29

It is rare to get hypothyroidism in cats, but possible. Hyperthyroidism is much more normal (or sometimes the treatment ends up causing hypothyroidism).

slipperywhensparticus · 13/06/2020 20:03

Thyroids go both ways but if it was under she would be tired dry skin etc same as a human really

My fat cat used to drag someone elses Sunday lunch home I mean NORMAL CATS bring home mice he brought a joint of pork

Toilenstripes · 13/06/2020 20:07

Can you get him playing? A few runs around the garden will do!
