Litter trays!

Our cat has always been an indoor cat and has obviously always used a litter tray. We recently moved from rented to owned however this has meant that the only place to put the litter tray is in the kitchen. We've always just gone for a normal litter tray but I am fed up of having to clean it out with fresh litter every day because otherwise the kitchen smells. We also have a dog who is intent on getting into it which is a pain in the arse!
We have been looking at self cleaning trays does anyone have one? Are they worth it in the long run?

My tray is in the kitchen too.
I have a covered litter tray and use wood based litter and have no problem with odours at all. Obviously when she first poops there’s a smell but we take that out instantly with a poop scoop bag. I only have to sieve the usable pellets out -dispose of the ones turned to sawdust where they’ve absorbed urine-clean the tray & top up with new pellets twice a week and it stays fresh.

Do you have an under stair cupboard? You could put a cat flap in that door and put the tray in there.

Get a covered one?

dobbyssoc · 07/06/2020 17:50

@vanillandhoney it is a covered one but it just stinks! He seems to do outrageously smelly poos!

Haha, fair enough! Grin

Have you tried different types of litter?

dobbyssoc · 07/06/2020 18:02

We have tried a few but going to try a wood based one as @LadyFeliciaMontague suggested.
@Fluffycloudland77 we do have an under stairs cupboard but it's full! Would be something to look into though. Thanks

Mine is in the kitchen. I use intersand classic litter and only do a full change once a month.

It's great for controlling smells. However I also have one who does horrendous poos and doesn't bury them. But if I cover it up. It does get rid of the smell quickly.

I've taken the door off the understairs cupboard, but did consider a cat flap in it! Thought I'd make sure she used it first. I buy CatSan natural clumping litter and its brilliant, hardly any smell tbh, its a revelation Grin

I line the tray with a black bin bag so that I can just take the whole thing out and throw it away if needed, as the litter would get stuck to the bottom of the tray when wet. I've found with the bin bag, it doesn't stick at all and you can just easily scoop up a clump of litter to throw it out.

Ours are both in bathroom due to severe lack of space, we use kitten litter mainly and this year I'm seriously considering adding a little bicarb of soda or the cat deoderiser granules you can get. They get cleaned pretty much as soon as they've been and completely cleaned and changed once a week with vinegar and water but sometimes they really do smell despite the covers...

We have a tray in the kitchen, it's a covered tray with wood pellets and it doesn't smell much at all compared to when we used to use the clay pellets. Also it's easier to clean because it doesn't get stuck to the bottom! We just got Asda's cheapest wood pellets litter and it's fine, cat took a little while to get used to it at first but he's fine with it now!
