Worried about kittens lip

Hi everyone.

we had our 8 week old kitten come home to us 3 days ago. Earlier than we had planned however the lady we adopted her from (she was not purchased) was very concerned with the way the mother cat had begun to treat her and kept trying to take her outdoors. They believed the risk of keeping her was higher than the risks of us having her come to us early.

I have noticed today that she has what looks like a spot on her bottom lip. It doesn’t seem to be hurting her, she is eating and playing fine and really come out of her shell today after being initially nervous. Currently awaiting a vet appointment for her health check and vaccinations but I was wondering if anyone had experience of something like this with a kitten?

Read this story about feline Eosinophilic Granuloma complex and see if it looks like it.

Your kitten is beautiful. She might be a bit older than 8 weeks. That could also explain the mum being a bit more forward in trying to get the kittens to be independent.
You said you have the normal appointment on the waiting list, I would ring the vet or email with these pictures and see if they can fast track you. Otherwise you will be on the list for routine appointments and it might take a while. The sooner you treat it, the less chance there is of it becoming infected and ulcerated.

Thank you both.

I have just spoken with the vets and have sent photos. They are calling back for a phone consultation this evening.

Wasn't expecting to have to be dealing with vets outside of vaccinations this early on! Hopefully is nothing to worry about but it is a little more swollen today so definitely want their advice.

She is so fluffy and those mad whiskers are hilarious!
They are a bit of a worry because you love them so much but fingers crossed it will be easily fixed.

Oh, in readiness for the consultation I would have a very big play with her, get her to really run and jump around for a good time to really tire her out. That way she may sit still for the online consultation.

Just wanted to thank you again for your advice. Spoke to the vet last night and they said it could be any number of things, likely and allergy or stress reaction. Because she is so young they don't just want to give her medication so wait and watch and if it starts to bother her to call them back. If not they will look again at her vaccinations.

Fingers crossed it just goes away. She's so gorgeous 😻

Does she have plastic food bowls? If so it could be an allergy, one of our cats reacts to certain plastics and her bottom lip swells up. If so, I’d swop them for metal or ceramic

rainbowscalling · 30/05/2020 14:53

She doesn't have plastic bowls, they are ceramic, but I was using a plastic fork to mix up her food at first, the lunchbox kind just in case it is the plastic. She was also biting the edge of her litter tray. We have a covered one but left the lid off for her to get used to it for the first day or 2. Have put the top in now so hopefully she will stop.

My cat has eosinophilic granuloma complex, perhaps once a year or even every two years we see the thickening of the Lower lip and once a lesion on inner thigh. Treatment is antibiotics, the first time it took months to go away and the then in as we always catch them early a few weeks. If it is that it's not a big problem, or at least it hasn't been for our boy.

We did away with all the plastic food bowls too as it gave him a rashy chin all of a sudden, that too cleared up.

What sensitive creatures cats can be!
