Blind cat

Our eldest cat aged 12 has gone blind fairy quickly . We first noticed her eyesight was not great about 2 weeks ago and now she seems completely blind . Her eyes go opaque regularly and then clear and I think she can sense light and dark . Waiting for a vets appointment but has anyone else had a blind cat and do they have any tips

Yes, ours is blind too, and like yours it happened fairly quickly.

She will bump into things a lot at first, but then she will start to use her feet and whiskers to feel her way. Their other senses take over and our cat also seems to be able to sense air movement and pressure. She's a bit deaf too, which doesn't help!

The vet told us that the best thing is to make sure you don't move furniture about, or leave things on the floor, so she could get a mind map of the area. Always leave food and water in the same place.

You need to be extra vigilant if she goes outside - don't let her out on her own, as she won't be able to defend herself if another animal has a go at her. Make sure you know where she is if she is outdoors. You need to ensure that there are no sharp objects like thorny bushes etc that she could hurt herself on by accidentally walking into them.

She will learn to cope in time, it is amazing the way they get used to it.

Get a vets appointment asap I've had a few weeks of turmoil with my little em and have read up on quite a bit. Sudden blindness is fairly common with high blood pressure as it causes retina detachment app in some cases this can be reversed if medicated quick enough.

Although I have no personal experience app if this is the case cats regaining some sight is fairly promising.

Agree with what emmacat says about seeing the vet urgently. Our cat's blindness is neurological, there's actually nothing wrong with the eyes, the issue is with the area in her brain dealing with sight. She gets seizures as well.

With your cat, it appears as though the issue is with her eyes. Hopefully there might be something the vet can do to alleviate the condition.

Definitely speak to the vet today, in case there's any chance of reversal. It sounds like there's something happening with them as they change, so really worth getting checked

My old girl lost her sight in her last year. Strangely enough, her eyes were normal. She'd still go out (kept to the garden though as she physically couldn't go over/under the fence). I noticed something was up as she kept moving her face along the wall to find the cat chap. Around the same time she started to eat fish food, now I realise is was because she could smell it easier and find her food.
