Worried about Harry

Please calm me down. Harry is off his food. He goes off his wet food every so often but now he’s off dry as well. He’s eating his wet food but very slowly and seemed to struggle with his vile fishy treats this evening. I’m worried there’s something wrong with his teeth or jaw again.

He seems fine in himself, rolling over on the new rug, snuggling against my legs on the recliner etc so maybe I’m worrying over nothing. We’re going to see how he is tomorrow and if he’s still not eating wet or dry phone the vet.

I know I’m probably overreacting but I’m struggling with everything at the moment and this is another thing for me to panic about

I’ve attached the obligatory picture taken a few days ago before he decided I need more grey hair!

Oh Harry, honestly our cats are nothing but trouble! Hope he's ok. Reassuring that he's behaving like himself. Snorg says to stop worrying your slave. She sends love.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/05/2020 22:37

Thank you, Snorg’s love is much appreciated. I’m struggling at the moment so everything seems so much worse.

The logistics of a vet trip don’t bear thinking about. He has to go in the boot of the car, the vet will collect him, wipe him down with hibiscrub, treat him, wipe him down again and put him back in the boot! I don’t want to put him through anything unnecessarily but I don’t want to leave him either.

My oldest boy has been sleeping a lot and not eating so much too. He's fine in himself otherwise but I know how you feel. I know cats can go downhill fast but you're a responsible cat owner and you always do the right thing by him. I know you'll monitor him properly.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2020 05:25

They put the cat in the boot, and wipe him with hibiscrub,? All I had to do was put madam on a table!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 08:20

We’ve had a look in his mouth and it looks as though his gums are swollen. He’s currently playing with his Mollys mouse so seems fine in himself but he’s off to the vets at 11.30 and I’m trying to stay off google!

We're back and the vet couldn't find anything wrong with his jaw! He's had a blood test and will probably need a dental. The first thing he did when we got home was eat his breakfast...

I'm now off to sell a kidney to pay for this lot!

Harry.........

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/05/2020 12:41

Oh Harry! I'm glad that he seems to be OK!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 12:46

I'm worried what the blood test might show, and also about him having to have an anaesthetic as he's no spring chicken. The vet couldn't find any trace of his heart murmur so hopefully that's positive.

It's on his records that he can't have ketamine so hopefully he won't react as badly as he did the last couple of times.

All the best for Harry - when is he going in?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 13:29

We don't know yet as the vet wants to see what the blood tests show. Fingers crossed he'll be OK. The vet didn't seem overly worried about the dental, but DH and I have decided that if the say he needs on 'at some time' we'll get it done sooner rather than later.

Fingers crossed - do keep us updated!

Love you Harry.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2020 15:00

love you as well Harry!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 19:55

The vet has just phoned and he's almost got a clean bill of health! His kidney levels are slightly raised and there's a slight inflammatory pattern in his white cells so it sounds as though there's an infection somewhere.

He's ignored his food with the antibiotics mixed in so I don't know how this will go!

I need to ring back on Friday to discuss booking his dental so more for me to worry about. Not that he's worried!

Glad that Harry is ok. Hopefully the antibiotics will work until he can get his teeth done. I have had to give various things to friends' cat when I have been cat sitting. He won't eat anything hidden in his food but he is a sucker for Licky Lix.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 13/05/2020 20:27

Leroy sends a nose-boop. Have you tried using Lick-e-Lix for antibiotics?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 20:40

Unfortunately Harry views Lick-e-Lix much in the same way as I would view poison! We tried it once but he wouldn't go near it. I'm hoping he might get a bit hungry in the night and eat but we'll see.

At least they made a better job with the blood test than his previous vet - the shaved patch is really neat and he didn't have bloody fur!

That's great news. I always get the vet to give a long acting antibiotic injection as Snorg is not as good as Fatty was with tablets!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/05/2020 21:40

I presumed that was what he was getting until she gave me the box of pills!

OP posts:
YesItsMeIDontCare · 13/05/2020 21:58

Have you tried different L-e-L flavours for Harry? There's a couple that Leroy won't touch with a bargepole, others he considers nice and a couple he loves so much he will even tolerate a pick up cuddle for!

Allergictoironing · 13/05/2020 22:13

Mine have just discovered the compressed fillets you can get, saw them for the first time last week. So far they like the Mackerel Encore treat, very much enjoyed the Encore Tuna fillet, and today almost killed each other trying to get to the Purely Holistic Duck with green tea extract.

Not sure how easy they would be to insert or even add powders or tablets to, but could be worth a try. Crushing the tablet & stirring into cat soup could be another option?

Toddlerteaplease · 14/05/2020 07:35

I used to get Fatty's 8 pills a day down her using a pill syringe thing.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/05/2020 09:44

Harry is taking his antibiotics in his food and I think they have kicked in quickly as he's now eating his wet food and biscuits.

He's booked in for a dental on Tuesday and I'm now worrying about him having an anaesthetic at 15 years old with early kidney disease and a slight heart murmur. I know he needs it done as it could be worse if it happens again but I'm so worried.
