Tips to wean off the litter tray?

My kitten is now starting to go outside. The cat flap is open for him from about 8am until 8pm. I don't want to get rid of the litter tray fully yet obviously as he will be in at night for a while yet.

Any tips to get him to go outside. He doesn't seem to get it. He is such a good boy, ever since we got him at 9 weeks he has used his tray without fail.

It took a few months before my 2 decided they preferred doing the toilet outside. One used to come in just to use the litter tray and then go back out. We still have the tray but it's not used much at all now.

P.s. it's best to keep the tray for when weather is bad or they need kept in for whatever reason

I wouldn’t. You always need a tray for bad weather or overnight so what’s the point.

But we have had cats for years, and never had a litter tray other than when they are kittens. We are rural, so plenty of places to go.

I don't have the room for a litter tray long term. I don't mind for the next 2-6 months obviously.

Let your cat carry on going in the litter tray.

Better a litter tray than your neighbours' gardens, surely? What's wrong with that?

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2020 12:00

Oops, cross posted.

We used to keep a litter tray outside for ours when she went outside. A covered one, which used to slot nicely underneath an old table. She won’t go outside any more so...

Or, as you are "rural", whatever that means, better a litter tray than en route to the water table/affecting a natural habitat/in food crops.

You'll have to find room for a litter tray OP. You may find that it isn't used much, but you should always have a tray available if you have a cat. Many cats don't like to go outside to toilet if its cold/raining/the ground is icy/there is a scary looking cat outside. And most cats as they age prefer to go inside and many people find they have to put a tray back as their cat gets older. A litter tray also makes it much easier to detect many health problems sooner than if you didn't have one.
