Kitten missing litter tray

We have a 15 week old kitten. She's settled really well into the family and seems happy! But occasionally she keeps missing her litter tray 😭 She gets into it but poops over the edge.
What can I do to prevent this?? I have a shallow rectangular q basic tray.
Should I get a larger one? One with higher sides?

Please help!

Some cats like two trays, one for wee and one for poo. Try another basic tray and if that doesn’t solve it get a high sided tray.

What you want to avoid is a high sided tray when she wants two trays and takes matters into her own paws by weeing outside the tray in protest.

Costs the earth, but I would totally recommend a Modkat cube one.

They are so easy to clean out and keep everything inside really effectively. My kitten got the hang of it instantly.

Modkat cube does look good but so expensive! The kitten also messes the litter all around the tray so this looks appealing.

I will try 2 trays first and see if she improves.

You can buy cheaper cube trays, but I don't think they have the liner thing which is part of what makes the Modkat so easy to use.

I winced at the price, but it's absolutely been worth it.

One of my boys often would sit far too back in the litter tray and miss. Wilkos do some really cheap puppy training pads. I put a couple underneath and they last a while as I'd just cut the edges off.

Haribo has had a sieve tray from Pets at Home since he was 10 weeks old, he's now 10 months. It is quite large and has a guard around it. He's never had any accidents.

I had a cat that used to do this all the time! Dig a hole, stand in it then poop over the side.
Current cats have a covered one. But as smaller kittens managed a fairly standard one.

Thank you everyone!

My female one (13 weeks) does this occasionally too. I think she thinks it's going in but just misses. She's definitely not as fastidious about cleaning as her brother. I'm hoping she'll grow out of it. Also plan on them going outside eventually so don't know if it's worth investing in a better litter tray - though the cube looks great!

Perhaps pile the litter up a bit towards the middle and leave a bare space round the edges of the tray so she will have to walk right into the tray before her paws feel litter so she will go more in the middle than at the side?

madcatladyforever · 15/05/2020 23:55

My cats still poops over the side and she is 19. Sometimes she tips the whole thing over sideways digging for Australia.
I find the best thing was to get a fully enclosed litter tray with a cat flap where she can't poop over the side.

I also agree with the hooded tray, you can remove the door if they don't like it.

My cat also does this and he’s 3 (and large), he also gets so vigorous in his scooping that he often scoops the poop over the edge. We put a couple of pads underneath the tray to catch it.

HappyBuyer · 16/05/2020 13:01

My two cats use the same type of litter box as from Madcatladyforever's post, albeit I have removed the flap door. No accidents outside the box in 5 years so far as both like to look out from it, when doing the business Grin
