Tell me about your maine coons

I'm enquiring about a kitten at the moment. I have never had a maine coon before but I do have two very silly ragdolls and I've read that maine coons are similar and live well with other animals. Pictures also please Smile

Mine moulted, but he adored being brushed, if I tried to brush any of the others he'd insist it was his turn, and clamber onto my knee to make sure I knew!

@FourPlasticRings the breeder is selling as strictly house cats. My ragdolls wouldn't have the common sense to go outside alone. I understand what you are saying but some cats can happily live indoors. My raggie boy does walk on the lead.

There are very many available to rescue, lots of owners aren't up for the grooming that some MC need so they don't end up as a knotty mess. I know a hobby breeder, some have been very nervy and shy, some are chill and some very naughty Grin

They'll tolerate it, sure. Some even prefer it, but you've got the potential to cause misery and there's no telling the temperament until you've got it. We originally brought our Maine coone out on a lead but she wanted to be free. She'd paw at the window, run around the house like a mad thing, try desperately to escape when the doors were open- you couldn't open windows at all. It would've been cruel to keep her inside and yes, had we persisted she may have eventually become resigned to it, but she wouldn't have been truly happy. Maine coons are far more intelligent than ragdolls, as a breed (though I maintain that mine was an idiot). They get bored more easily. In my opinion, if you absolutely can't under any circumstances let a cat outside you probably shouldn't get one.

I hope I'm allowed to post gratuitous cat photos as I have a Norwegian Forest Cat not a Maine Coone, but she is long haired and literally (as you can see from the photos) a ball of fluff. She is black and white so I have visible cat hair on every shade of clothing HmmGrin

She needs grooming regularly but likes it luckily. She is thick as mince. I absolutely love her to bits.

I forgot the actual relevant part I meant to say Blush which is that my friends have a Maine Coone and she won't go outside (her choice) or play with them inside. She is very aloof but seems happy.

NorskSkogkatt · 09/05/2020 11:00

Why is there an extra e on my posts Hmm

IHaveBrilloHair · 09/05/2020 11:51

Oh, she's beautiful.

FourPlasticRings · 09/05/2020 11:56

Probably autocorrect @NorskSkogkatt. Don't ask me why.

ElizabethMainwaring · 09/05/2020 12:28

@Fourplasticrings
I totally agree that it would be incredibly cruel if op for an outdoorsy mc like mine.
She too used to climb out of windows, even upstairs ones. There is no way that we could have kept her in.
Mc s are wrongly sold as indoor cats, but that isn't always the case.

FthisS · 09/05/2020 12:38

Thank you for the advice regarding outdoors. I don't think a maine coon would be the right choice. The breader was insistent that it's indoors only but I only have experience with ragdolls who are very docile cats.

I have two british shorthair cats who are purely indoor cats and the breeder would only let us take the kittens if we were having them as indoor cats. All cats are different and I know a lot of other people who keep british shorthairs indoors and aslong as you spend the time playing with them and they have a lot of activity toys to play with they seem very happy with this lifestyle. I do have leads for mine so they can go in the garden but neither of them seem particularly bothered. British shorthairs are very chilled and laid back cats and a lot of fun as they are very loving and affectionate. Maybe this breed is an option? Smile

Our first cat was half Maine Coon and he was The Greatest Cat to have Ever Lived. He was a CPL rescue with FIV and was fabulous. So friendly and gentle. He never once scratched or bit anyone. He died 6 years ago aged 14 (PTS) of FIV complications. We miss him so much. He did moult like a bugger though Smile

StatisticallyChallenged · 14/05/2020 11:47

I have 4, all quite contentedly housecats. They're lovely cats, very friendly anchilled. One of mine tangles badly and occasionally meets the clippers, one has no knots at all, two get the odd tug. They're very good with kids too

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 15/05/2020 14:56

@randommess Genuine question - could you let me know where you have seen any available for rescue please? I have been looking for a rescue to nearly two years and haven't had an success in finding one, apart from one kitten where they had closed the waiting listing since so many people had asked about her!

RandomMess · 15/05/2020 16:44

There are more than one cat clubs for MC have you approached them all and asked about their welfare and rescue section? If you don't mind an older cat there will be retired queens etc too.
