Cat is drinking loads, any reason why?

My cat is about 5 years old. He has dried food royal canin so always drinks water a fair bit. This morning he has drank 3 times, gone off to sleep then just come back for more has literally drank a whole full bowl.

He is eating but just seems a little strange. Does anyone know if there is a particular reason?

He appears well nothing other than the drinking

Have his toilet habits changed at all? If your cat uses a litter tray, are you able to see what colour his urine is? Also, how is the weather where you are? If it is sunny and hot then I would not be too worried for now, but I would keep an eye on him. If you are worried, give your vets a ring. They are there to help.

You should ask the vet to check for diabetes ..
This is what my cat did and he was diabetic

Vinorosso74 · 05/05/2020 14:15

I would definitely keep a close eye on him. Our old cat started drinking noticeably more when she became diabetic. However, I think it was a more gradual increase (a few years back now). An increase in water intake could be other things too and 5 seems young to become diabetic.
If you're concerned call the vets as most are doing phone/video consults.

It can also be a sigh of kidney damage-

my 5 year old cat was in acute kidney failure when she got to the vets with no other symptoms other than drinking lots. The vet wondered if she'd drunk anti-freeze or eaten poison. We have no idea what happened and she doesn't go far so seemed unlikely but we will never know.

By some miracle she survived it and continues to rule over us.

Maybe not the same, bit our wee dog has just done the very same. Turns out it was a UTI, got her urine tested, short course of anti-bios and she is back to normal.

I'd say check for diabetes if the cat has also lost weight.

Probably merits a visit to the vet if possible.

So today I found sick in the garden...cat biscuits in it. Not sure when he was sick.

He's eaten his biscuits today and seems himself. Hasnt drank anymore excessively like he did this morning

Hopefully, it's a one off, but if he continues to drink so much, do get him checked out by the vet to rule out diabetes or kidney disease. If by the slightest chance he does have either, best to get him treated now rather than letting him become run down.

He's been fine today not drank crazily like yesterday and has eaten and seems happy
