Wet food for elderly cat

I've got an old girl (about 14) with thyperthyroidism that is responding well to meds. Her condition did decline before she was diagnosed. She lost weight, has become a bit arthritic, and lost the shine on her coat.

She's always been a really pretty cat. The vet would always say how athletic she looked. Now she doesn't really groom herself either so we brush her most days.

She gets the whiskas 11+ twice a day which she really seems to like plus dry food to graze on during the day.

Is there a better food for putting on weight and condition for elderly cats?

Aw she likes the sun.
Have you tried a better quality wet food? I Granted our lad is only 3 but he likes Thrive and Blink. We buy Thrive in bulk from Zooplus but some vets sell individual tins (I know not so practical at the moment). Morrisons sell Blink and they are doing a trial for £1 if you want a delivery. Both these foods are high meat content
Lily's Kitchen is cheaper, most supermarkets sell it and is a better quality food than Whiskas.
There is a lot of choice on Zooplus and possibly some better for an older cat. One thing with wet food make sure it is a complete food rather than complementary.

When is the last time she saw her vet? Has she had full blood work? I’m asking because she might need hydration or a scan to see if there is anything else going on. She’s beautiful! I’ve had a couple of old cats respond well to subcutaneous hydration.

My oldies like Lilys Kitchen, thrive and applaws tins. Have her B12 levels been checked as well? Might be worth including in her next bloods a lot of oldies are deficient in it and it’s easily supplemented.

She last had a full blood work up about 4 months ago and everything was within normal. It was a 6 month post meds check up. She has her meds on her food because she is really difficult to handle and hates being held. She's put on a little bit of weight since treatment but I will try some of the foods suggested and some more treats!

we have a 15yo Persian (really badly bread, arthritic now and with no teeth). He was 2.5 kilos when he came to us and he loses weight easily from any stress or change. We feed him Lilly's Kitchen 3x a day plus Orijen dry food any time he comes and asks for it. He also gets butter as a treat :) He put on one full kilo which I am absolutely super happy about.

Her coat condition might be down to hyperthroidism. The lack of washing could be down to arthritis so it's worth having a chat with the vet to see if Loxicom might help. Another reason for the lack of washing, might be dementia or just old age and she can't be bothered.

My lovely Lottie has both conditions, but we managed to keep her going until she lost her sight and sense of smell (she didn't realise her food was in front of her).

I'd second Blink - to be honest just keep a variety on a roll. I have about 6 boxes (Blink, Felix, Whiskas, Sheba etc) on the go presently, just to keep my 17 year old interested. She's on Metacam permanently for her arthritis - I know it can do bad things to their organs but I'd rather quality than quantity of life for her, and apart from high blood pressure she's doing well and grooming still. It might be pain that's stopping her?

Lily's Kitchen, Natures Menu, Meowing Heads, Crave these are all great pate type ones with high meat content... Applaws/Encore, Thrive and Blink are more meaty bits with a little broth or jelly.

ClientQ · 01/05/2020 18:51

I would go on zooplus and have a look? They do a lot of high meat content
Kitten food is usually higher calorie and easier to eat

Thanks guys. I'll have a chat with the vet too. She eats happily enough and has all her teeth thankfully. I'll try a few of these to see which she likes best.
