Can microchips move??

So, I invested in a microchip catflap a few months ago, to make sure my younger cat could get in and out safely. My much older cat (16-ish) hadn't really been bothering with the great outdoors for a while, so I didn't try to introduce her to it. Older cat has now started getting out through it in the early hours of the morning, and can't of course get back in. So, I've been trying to register her microchip as she comes back in, and I'm not convinced its registering. This may because I'm not at my best at 3.30am, but I was also wondering whether it could have moved around over the 14+ years that its been in place. Is this a thing, does anyone know?? And if it is, how to solve it?

They can move but also check your microchip company. Mine has gone!!! My cat is 19 and I wanted to inform them of my address change and they are no longer in existence, her chip has been defunct for ages and I didn't know. I've had to get a new on put it because she still likes to go out.

yes they do often migrate under the cats skin to a new location. Out of four cats, 2 of their microchips have done this causing problems with microchip feeders and catflaps - not sure what to do about it beyond seeing the vet and trying again

I checked the microchip company - or rather there's a facility on the catflap website where you can run through the microchip number and they'll tell you if its still valid, and it is. In the current circs I can't take the cat to the vet for anything other than an emergency, so I can't get her re-chipped. I may have to move to plan b for the short-term, which is lock the catflap at night, so she can't get out. Drat!

Yep, my old dog had one that migrated to over his ribs. Had to have it removed and a new one put in.

My cat is chipped but I can't feel hers at all which is worrying now I think about it.

They can move. They can even, occasionally, work their way out of the skin.
