The bloody cat has just eaten a hair tie

Noticed her sitting pinging it about and before I could get it off her it had disappeared into her mouth Shock I was ready to have to try and wrestle it out of her throat but she just started jumping about as normal. Watching her now she seems fine, breathing normally and has just had something to eat.

I'm seeing conflicting advice online, some saying vet asap and others saying keep an eye on things and check her poo for it over the next couple of days. It was a plain hair tie, no metal if that makes a difference.

My hair ties are always going missing and I've just assumed she'd hidden them somewhere too secret for me to find now I'm wondering if she's been eating them all this time and I've just seen her do it for the first time?!

Thanks for any advice!

Ring your vet, a nurse will be there & she can’t be the first cat to eat one.

I gave them a call but the voicemail said they won't be open until tomorrow morning. Will give them a phone when they open at 9.

Did you see The Yorskhire Vet episode where a cat had done exactly the same as yours? Something like the owner's hair ties kept disappearing and the vet operated on her cat and found loads in her intestine. Call your vet in the morning and they'll probably tell you to bring her in. Cats are such a challengeConfused

@Want2beme Oh my god, no I've not seen that! I really think that's what she must be doing because there's been times I've seen her playing with one then maybe ten minutes later I'll go to get it and can't find it. And I've pulled out the couch and only found a couple but I've lost soo many! Didn't think for a second she was eating them, why on earth would she do that?!

Also TMI but there's been times I've scooped her poo and noticed it's split but hanging together with something and I assumed it was her fur but now wondering if it was bits of hair tie.

I swear she just lives to stress me out Shock she's got a real cheek, I bought her fancy dinners the other week for a treat and she turned her nose up at those but she's scoffing hair ties behind my back?!

@Want2beme I remember that. There were hundreds of them! Wasn't it a Siamese or something?

Want2beme · 24/04/2020 15:43

Yes, Toddler, there were loads!

How's the hair tie cat burglar today, dazzler?

dazzlinghaze · 26/04/2020 16:17

Luna passed the hair tie today Grin

We had a cat in the 80’s who stole and ate the string of a joint of beef. She just passed it over a few days. Remember my mum following her round with the scissors to keep it clipped short!

dazzlinghaze · 26/04/2020 16:26

Omg @Paperyfish that's gave me a good laugh!

That's great news.

Lovely! I'm sure you enjoyed checking the litter tray!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/04/2020 09:40

Do you have a catproof box for your hair ties now?

dazzlinghaze · 27/04/2020 16:56

@YetAnotherSpartacus I just keep them in a drawer but when I take one out at night
I chuck it on the bedside table but I guess that's the end of that! Might need to invest in a padlocked box because I fear it's only a matter of time before she learns to open the drawers Grin

She's also a terrible bottle lid thief, thankfully she doesn't eat those, she just planks them under the couch...

I doubt your vet would want to do surgery unless the tie causes a problem. Keep her in monitor for any changes in appetite or toileting and call them ASAP if any changes. Oh and get a hair tie box Grin
