Do you think your cat understands what you say to them?

Or do they just respond to your tone of voice. Having an argument with my sister, about whether Cheddar really does understand. I am convinced she does. I asked her to come in, and she did. I also asked Magic to go and find her once, when I couldn't find her and she did.

Mine doesn't even respond when I call his name Grin

My cat definitely knows the word treat. She also responds to the tone of my voice.

She knows the count of her name, and will come home if I call her.

Not a cat but 2 dogs here they definitely understandable lots of things, I think they understand a lot more than animals are given credit for! The obvious things - walkies breakfast dinner tea etc but also this way, come on, wait for me, get in your own bed (they look up and sort of smile then shuffle closer to my leg and lie back down 😂) one of ours is very nonchalant and the other is super clingy and he seems very in tune with us!

The bigger question is do you all understand what your cat wants you to do?.

Were you easy to train or a bit slow on the uptake?.

TyroSaysMeow · 26/04/2020 22:33

One of mine definitely understands 'deflea'. She's straight behind the fridge the moment she heard it, regardless of context.

They both understand 'suppertime' but not, unfortunately, the preceding 'not'.

midlifecrash · 26/04/2020 23:24

My cat appears to understand "okay, but it's late, be back in 20 minutes".
It is absolutely impossible that she could understand what 20 minutes is even if she understood the words. But she always is back.

KoalasandRabbit · 26/04/2020 23:34

Ours understands tuna and t-u-n-a when we tried to secretly have it. She accelerates from the sloth shuffle to the speed of light to the kitchen. She also understands Papa and all our names and hers.

She gets cross with DH if he doesn't say her name enough. She understands water. She blinks at I love you and you are beautiful. We have a rabbit and she gets cross if its name is mentioned, she also runs away at the word cattery or vet. After tuna she says ah-ah which we think is her way of saying thank you. First stroke you give her she does brrrrup every time.

Staywithmemyblood · 26/04/2020 23:37

Ours knows her name, and “teatime.” DH is trying to teach her “stop scratching the fucking carpet!” 🙈 😂He loves her really though cos she gives him little kitty kisses and follows him out to work in the mornings 😻

Looks like I have won my argument then!

The girl knows EVERYTHING. We talk about politics, the meaning of life, Donald fucking Trump, everything. The boy doesn’t even know his own name.

Monty27 · 27/04/2020 04:29

Totally. My cats are the closest to dogs you'll ever get 😂😂

iklboo · 27/04/2020 17:28

Our two know their names but will only look at you if you use the shortened version.

KoalasandRabbit · 27/04/2020 17:37

I would say your cat definitely understands you, your sister less so, maybe your sister is just responding to tone of voice. Grin
