My cat is everything to me; she is 4 and a half; since I moved into a new flat (she doesn't go out), I am started to see her weight gain. I managed to slip in biscuits she wasn't keen on, until I made the transfer completely. She went back down, I was so delighted. For some reason I began to think she was too thin and would get ill. So put her on a different but more expensive food she liked. Now I cannot reverse the diet. I have always thought food equals love to her, and also I have cut her right back, so now she bolts her biscuits she is so hungry (every 4 hours under an egg cup full) then is sick. Not every time. Can anyone please help me, as I am worried she is 5 kilos and she somtimes tolls over when she is trying to lick clean her legs or paws? I am so guilt ridden, worried and I cannot lose her I love her so much , its just her and me. Thank you - Molly cat lover. username: Mharte88

@Mharte88 saying you have to post a pic of your cat is just a bit of fun , as posters have said it not meant in a mean way or strictly in any rules ( we are just been nosy ) Smile

I agree with getting her to eat slowly that can be done with different bowls like them
drfoxmag.com/best-slow-feed-bowl-for-cats/
or I feed my hyperactive kitten in lots of different areas of the house so he has to hunt for his food , i also put it in hard to reach places like in paper bags small boxes , oxo boxes are ideal if you cut the lid in half then tape it shut so there is only a small gap your cat will have to learn to flip the box upside down to get her ( dry ) food out .
I have also kept some card board packing that came with a vac , it has lots of small deep sections that i put his food in too .

Once the lock down is over take to the vets to get her checkout and make sure there is nothing wrong , most vets have a scale that you can use when ever you want so you can weigh regularly.

Have you seen charts like this?.

Hi OP, sorry if you thought we were being rough with you, honestly we weren't trying to be nasty!

One reason why feeding wet (or partly feeding wet) may be an advantage in your case is that dry is much more highly energy efficient than wet, so they get much more per gram with dry than with wet. So you can feed a physically larger amount for the same calorific value, thereby satisfying a greedy cat more easily. It's rather like humans on a diet - snacking on rice cakes for example is better than snacking on sweets.

Yes there is a downside with somewhat more smelly poo (though I gather the higher quality wet foods are less likely to stink the litter tray out as badly), but there is a compromise to everything we do so it may be worth at least thinking about?

I understand what you are saying and thank you for the kind replies. We are making some progress, exercising by now jumping onto a table and dressing table I move around at the time I first wrote in. I was heartened by the lady who said to harden up a but about the pitiful meows she can make, when she wants her food she sits on my foot, and looks up at me!! But also very helpful was this distraction idea of when she does that to play stupid and start brushing her - thar really works!!! Thank you. She has lost some weight her face is slimmer, and I have taken a photo, so it can be before and after. You are all very kind and even more very persuasive!! I hope you like her.

Oh she is absolutely gorgeous, look at those green eyes!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/04/2020 22:05

I would have real difficulty resisting any of her demands!

Windyatthebeach · 21/04/2020 22:07

Have you tried your dcat with any veg op??
Our 2 snack on leftover cooked veg!
Peas, carrots and broccoli are the favourites!!
Less calories than dcat treats!

Can you get a laser pen for chasing? Our cats love theirs, our male sits like Bast looking up at DH waiting to play .

When I got our cats I was able to produce a photo of our female sitting on a chair the day she arrived but our male was so shy he hid under the sofa . Luckily they are identical black short haired so they could just imagine what he looked like Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/04/2020 12:01

Oh she has the most beautiful emerald eyes! It’s so hard to say no to them!.

Mine always loved a brushing session.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/04/2020 12:16

Thank you for the photo! She is gorgeous!

TeddyIsaHe · 22/04/2020 12:20

Ahh op she is beautiful! And I too would have a hard time saying no to that face.

rubydoobydoo · 22/04/2020 12:28

Awwww she is beautiful - here's my ginger cat, it's so hard to say no to those poor starving faces isn't it!

It really is a case of toughening up to it, they can be very persuasive and good at acting like they're starving but you know you have provided enough food (that they WOULD eat if genuinely starving!). With particularly fussy cats and food changes I have found it helps to look at it as a sort of siege situation! Just say to the cat you won't be the one to crack first! Grin

My ginger girl is an indoor cat. She eats dry food which is out all the time, fortunately she picks one biscuit at a time and there is also water available. She has all sorts of toys around my flat.

Mharte88 · 22/04/2020 19:53

Thank you again to all of you who have been so lovely about her. I have seen on Amazon a lazer toy, which interacts with your cat, in other words they can chase the light all over the place , so great exercise for her. It got to the point I was feeding her good biscuits but she did not really like them, so ate much less and lost the weight very quickly, but I felt so mean, as her food is the highlight of her day. So now I am turning to better entertainment toys for her and like I say more jumping opportunities. The lock down also means I am with her almost 24 x7 so she can read me like a book! If I say no you are too early for lunch, she stomps off and takes it out on her scratch post. How do they know to the minute the times they are fed, the times you should be up and out of bed and any other routines you have, she knows and is never wrong!!! See I kind of admire that!!. The lazer light is twenty pounds so have ti wait until next week, but I think she will love it; I will take a photo and let you all know. Thank you as it is so nice not to be on your own with this kind of situation. Molly and Milly

Would this help with the bolting and vomiting? It looks fun.

Mharte88 · 24/04/2020 22:22

Thank you so much for your message. Not only does the brush work, her coat after a week of this is superb. It has become shiny and smooth and I believe she is very proud of her coat and she also likes to look groomed. She does wash continuously which I love watching and is ridiculously particular about her litter try.
I believe that over the next few weeks she is going to lose this weight and not to mention with brushing her so much now, albeit very gently, I swear I have taken off a cat's worth of fur and for that I thank you as I didn;t realise she was still wearing her winter coat. I have noticed a slight indent returning to her waist and weight has gone from her dear little face. Ideally I thought I should get her a playmate, but honestly with the price of food and not being allowed pets, it was not an option and now I am so glad I joined Mumsnet and got all the help I have.
