Kitten in season/ no spaying during lockdown.

Can anyone give me any hope that my darling kitten is not going to get pregnant during lockdown? She was due to be spayed right when vets stopped doing any routine procedures. Of course typically she is now in season. Luckily she has never been out, but I was planning to let her out after spaying. She is now trying all the tricks to get outside.

Given we have no idea how long this will go on for, is there anything I can do at all to protect my kitten? As you can imagine, it's pretty stressful.

Keep her locked in.

Apart from the obvious?

She doesn't go out. But she is trying. It will get harder and harder as the summer months come on. She managed to lift a latch and push a window open that one of the kids hadn't quite secured the latch on. I caught her, but by chance.

The BVA have updated there guidance if she's at risk of pregnancy she can be spayed for population control. So if she does get out get her booked in immediately 🙂

Oh? Really? Amazing. I will try and get through to the vet and ask again. I'll go and look when the guidance changed. I spoke to them 10 days ago and they were refusing. I'll try other vets (although frustrating as I've already partially paid through her kitte vaccination scheme) if needs be. I can not bear the thought of her going through a pregnancy.

Just found the guidance. In place for Tuesday onwards. Keeping everything crossed they will see her.

The guidance is not a must do list it is a possible if the risk assessment is felt to be safe in an individual practice.
Please also bear in mind that vets have been a asked to us as little as possible of oxygen and anaesthetic drugs so that they don't make the supply issues in the NHS any worse.

Vets have been asked by the RCVS ( their governing body the BVA is a sort of union) to consider chemical methods of population control before surgery. So you maybe offered and injection to delay heat first.

An injection is absolutely fine. Anything to stop her having kittens.

We’re in the same boat- initially vets said it had to wait as non essential but then as mentioned enough guidance has changed given the lockdown is extended. But then the weekend happened and lovely weather and I’ve got a 22 month old who can open the door but not close it quickly so we had a few very near misses. I explained we’re finding it hard to keep her in safely to the vet via email and they said they’ll do it in that case so she’s booked in for Wednesday.
Relieved as she’s also weeing all over the place again. Worth asking your vet if it continues to be tricky to keep her in.

Our kittens' neutering was cancelled (brother and sister). They're five months.
Hopefully she's not reached maturity yet because we're pretty sure they've done the deed Confused

I need to speak to the vets this week as they're getting behind on flea treatments etc so I might ask them then.

As an aside we have been letting them out for the last couple of weeks. Very impressed that within 24 hours they learnt to use the cat flap, to toilet outside and to respond to the Dreamies rattle Grin

We have a brother and sister. Our vet neutered them both at 5 months because it was such a risk. Boy cat still gives it a go occasionally so than goodness we did.

I think if I were you I'd have a call around and see if you can get at least one of them done (the boy... boy didn't even notice. Girl had a bit of a harder time and we had to keep them separated because play was too rough for her for a while)
