Gumtree kittens

A rescue I follow has posted about some scumbag selling kittens on Gumtree. Seven ginger kittens; dad is apparently the neighbours pure breed ginger (moggy to you and me).
Anyway they are selling the boys for £1200; the girls you have to contact them due to the rarity of female ginger kittens. This is their wording. Kittens are currently 2 days old bit you can reserve them for £200.
Words fail me.....

@zsazsajuju
I don’t know why you think it is hysteria.
Poor bloody cat is being breed from over and over.
Like there are not enough cats and kittens needing homes as it is.

Oldestchild90s · 11/04/2020 21:14

Cat rescue places are not overrun 😂

Idiot.

Shmithecat2 · 11/04/2020 21:14

@zsazsajuju

Cats have kittens, not like we are overrun by them in fact its often quite difficult to get a cat.

Are you taking the piss? Confused

Wolfiefan · 11/04/2020 21:17

Our local rescues are frequently overrun.
There will always be idiots who don’t spay or neuter. Cats won’t die out. Hmm
Kittens and very young children are an awful mix so the rescues are right to be concerned.
We have cats. Neutered before we let them out.
I volunteer at a rescue. Someone found their cat was pregnant. The rescue took it, looked after the kittens until they could be homed and spayed and returned mum to owners.
That someone was a lot more responsible than the idiots flogging on scumtree.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2020 21:17

You’d be better off reporting them to HRMC

Vinorosso74 · 11/04/2020 21:26

I think @zsazsajuju is being deliberately obtuse. If my post is daft then read it properly. It is not my neighbour but some Gumtree random.
Rescues do let people with children adopt it's done on a case by case basis. I have heard of people being declined because of their attitude......
Rescues have waiting lists of cats to come in. It's good it isn't easy to get a cat-they are living creatures!
Unneutered males are more at risk of FIV, being run over or getting lost whilst looking for females. Unneutered females are more at risk of pyometria, complications around birth (especially common in young mums), mammary cancers. The lists are long!
Anyway, it angers me and clearly others.

Makes me so angry. Especially seeing the damage that was done to Fatty and Snorg. From being breeding queens in a kitten farm.

sweetkitty · 11/04/2020 23:21

Well the Cat Rescue I know well is often overrun with cats and kittens. Two of mines mother was dumped by a farm heavily pregnant walked into the farmhouse lay down and gave birth, she was about 6-7 months old. The other one I have was found in a shed again dumped. (These cats are not feral).

On Gumtree there’s so so many kittens and older cats for sale.

Oh I have 4DC and a large dog and managed to adopt 3 kittens.

zsazsajuju · 11/04/2020 23:26

@Vinorosso74 - if it’s some random on gumtree how could you possibly know she has had any other litters? Or have any knowledge of any actual welfare issues? Tbh if they actually had done it before they would know that’s not the going rate for kittens.

Cats can get lost anyway whether neutered or not. While it’s generally responsible to neuter your pet, theres no general welfare issues for unneutered cats. It’s their natural state.

Cat shelters are not overrun. If they are they should stop being so restrictive about who they let adopt. But they’re not. As I said, I tried repeatedly to find a single cat (was not bothered about a kitten) to adopt for about six months from all local shelters. I could not find a single cat they said was suitable for children and none of them had many cats at all. This is also the experience of pretty much everyone I know who approached cat shelters. We have a garden, live in a quiet culdesac and have no other pets. We are abundantly suitable owners. But we never even got to the stage of them assessing us as they always claimed to have no cats that could live with children.

If shelters are keeping cats in cages rather than let them be adopted because they “don’t like people’s attitude” as you say, then that’s genuinely despicable and shows scant regard for cats welfare. In my experience though, as many cats are now neutered, it seems shelters just don’t have that many cats ns want to be choosy about who they sell them to. Which is fine but then people who want a cat will obviously buy one from gumtree (everyone I know who has a cat got them that way - as I said, shelters generally don’t let families with children adopt).

To my mind, a family whose pet has had kittens is better welfare wise than a breeder anyway.

zsazsajuju · 11/04/2020 23:31

@sweetkitty - are those cats difficult to home? I live in a city in a busy area and approached 3 large organizations repeatedly both by phone, email and turned up a few times. Never once was there a single cat suitable. Same for all families I know (including in another city in the UK.

Why does your local shelter have so many cats? Is it in an area of low demand? Or are they perhaps being too restrictive about who they let adopt?

Vinorosso74 · 12/04/2020 07:44

Mum cat is 4 so very likely she has had other litters. Seller also put ad on another pet site (which was subsequently removed) and is a regular advertiser.
Constant breeding is welfare issue.
If someone has an attitude which clearly demonstrates they don't understand welfare needs they will be refused a cat.
Two refusals I I know of: someone who wanted a cute kitten and wouldn't get her spayed until she'd had kittens; another who was rude to the receptionist demanding a specific cat who was completely unsuitable for her home.
Shelters aren't Amazon; cats don't come in to order.

@zsazsajuju you are COMPLETELY obtuse and really need to get yourself informed. I suspect you weren’t able to adopt a cat from a rescue because they sussed out your attitude. Our charity does rehome animals to families with children but everything is assessed on a case by case basis. You clearly do not care about animals. The Gumtree situation described above is a massive welfare issue with many many ramifications. If you don’t have the imagination to work it our yourself please at least be willing to be informed by people with more knowledge and experience rather than keep your festering mentality. And possibly raising your children, the next generation, with the same ignorant ideas.

Wolfiefan · 12/04/2020 08:11

Wow so much ignorance.
Shelters ARE overrun.
There ARE huge health implications in not neutering.
If shelters are “choosy” it’s only because they care about animal welfare and are trying to place cats in a situation where they will be happy for their whole lives. (And our old girl nearly made 20!)
We got kittens but waited until my youngest was about 6. Kittens and toddlers are an awful mix. Cats and kids who can’t be quiet or gentle around them is an awful mix.

Oldestchild90s · 12/04/2020 08:25

She's just trying to serve up a shit storm. She's on another thread about rescue dogs and whinging about them too.

MrsRaab · 12/04/2020 08:40

@zsazsajuju it's very clear why they wouldn't give you a cat

Vinorosso74 · 12/04/2020 09:27

@MrsRaab exactly. I'm quite grateful us volunteers don't deal with the public! I would rather clean the litter trays. That said most people who come in are nice.
