Why do cats do this?

I have enough cat food to feed a small army of cats, not because I wanted to stockpile but because Harry will only eat one flavour of on non supermarket brand. You can probably guess what's coming next - as of yesterday he doesn't want it, he will only eat biscuits!

I've explained to him about food shortages but does he care? No, of course not! Look at him, not a care in the world!

Why do cats do this?

Because they are cats! Hide it away, then in a couple of months let him think you've given it away to a local rescue... Wink

Wolfiefan · 28/03/2020 21:27

And when you stockpile the biscuits and give away the other food?
He will want that one flavour back.

He’s adorable! 😻

I’ve just found my cat in the utility room breaking into the supply of sachets I had put aside (as he would no longer eat them by choice) there was literally a box on the floor with the cat surrounded by half bitten sachets. If I put them in his bowl he’d of turned his nose up I bet!

willowpatterns · 28/03/2020 21:31

Look at that fat furry belly. He can manage on that for a day or two until his appetite returns...

gamerchick · 28/03/2020 21:31

I dont pander to it me. If she doesnt eat then she goes hungry. I'll put a small spoonful out with biscuits so it doesn't go to waste if she doesn't eat it. If she does I'll put more out. Or I'll just feed biscuits for a few days.

They're buggers.

Ours would only ever eat Aldi senior, then one day had a pouch of Sheba (the small, not good value for money ones) We bought plenty to see her through the next few weeks. Woke up this morning, oh no, didn't fancy the Sheba so had the last pouch of Aldi that's been in the back of the cupboard. Miaowing like mad now for food but would rather starve than eat that nasty Sheba

I've a good mind to take her to Aldi tomorrow and make her queue with me

gamerchick · 28/03/2020 21:40

Whatever you do, dont give that fancy, expensive cat tuna. Food strike for days after one of those things.

teraculum29 · 28/03/2020 21:48

My cat was like that. She used to have dry food plus pouch of wet food, she would only eat one brand, certain flavour and only in gravy etc.
At some point we run out of dry food, so I gave her extra pouch. So from then she only eats pouches and treats now and then.
And now not only she eats different flavours, but also brand, or texture didn't matter.

Harry is lovely! I think what happens is they get bored of their usual food. My cat has done this several times, but after an interlude of a couple of weeks, he returns to the original with renewed enthusiasm! I love the way Harry is 'hugging his face' I think rescue cats do that, cats who have had experience of the mean streets...

Toddlerteaplease · 29/03/2020 09:33

I don't know why you are surprised, this is Harry we are talking about. Grin

YetAnotherSpartacus · 29/03/2020 09:44

Harry is saying 'enough!' I don't want to show my face on TLT again!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/03/2020 11:07

I give into him as he's so bloody minded he won't give in and eat. It's annoying as it means he's not getting his Ipakitine but his previous vet told me the most important thing is he eats something. I presume he must have been listening...

BovaryX he is a former cat of the streets. Apparently he used to break into houses and fight the resident cats for their food! He must have been bloody good (and less fussy!) as there's not a mark on him!

I feel your pain.
I have bin cats. Yes, cats who would have starved if they hadn't dragged disgusting rotting foods out of our open street bins.
I poached chicken for them one day as a treat and chopped it all up nicely in the stock....
Nope. Not acceptable, apparently.

(and yet, if I put scraps in the kitchen bin, they are DESPERATE to get them)

ClientQueen · 29/03/2020 11:21

Ollie who spent 4 years stray is the pickiest eater ever. Now he won't eat unless he gets salmon oil on his food. If I don't, he sits and looks mournfully at the bowl and then at me

Walkingthedog46 · 29/03/2020 11:31

Only one thing for it - make him queue up for his supplies at the supermarket himself!

Deathraystare · 29/03/2020 17:46

I've a good mind to take her to Aldi tomorrow and make her queue with me

Make her do all your shopping. Serve her right. Lazy cat!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/03/2020 17:53

I'm going to cut him some slack today, he's had a bad day. First of all we put his Bravecto on his neck and then I noticed his face was red and puffy so he's been cleaned with Hibiscrub! I haven't seen much of him since!

OP posts:
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/03/2020 20:47

And to finish him (and me!) off, I put the wrong flavour biscuits down! Why didn't I know he's also gone off fish biscuits and only wants turkey?

OP posts:
Gingerkittykat · 29/03/2020 20:52

Put the food in the bin, walk away and within half an hour the bin will have been emptied and the food is eaten.

I alternate between Felix and Sheba trays and bought a 40 pack of Felix and several packs of 12 trays of Sheba.

Guess which 2 cats no longer like Sheba?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/03/2020 21:10

Harry wouldn't dream of getting anything out of the bin, he won't even eat a biscuit that's dropped on the floor! (To be fair he's so accident prone I don't want him trying to get anything out of the bin as he'd probably go headfirst into it!)

Toddler calls him Baron Harry and he really lives up to it!

Duchessofblandings · 29/03/2020 21:12

We can’t get our usual online and she was turning her nose up at the apparently substandard pouches. So I switched to just dry for a few days and hey presto, the inferior stuff became acceptable.

If looks could kill, though .......

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/03/2020 21:15

That's what I'm trying, although I apparently managed to get that wrong! I'm giving him a couple more days on dry and then trying a pouch. I don't like wasting his food at the best of times but especially not now. I've told him there are starving cats out there who would give anything for a nice James Wellbeloved pouch or bowl of fish biscuits and he looked at me as if I was mad...

OP posts:
Craftycorvid · 29/03/2020 21:18

Harry is just gorgeous but, no, he doesn’t look as though he’s going to starve any time soon.
