Vet had to cancel spaying op for 7 month old Tom. Will he be OK or turn into a raging sex beast?

Just that. Teddy is 7 months old and ace. We obviously adore him he's a very naughty normal little cat. The vets obviously have to prioritise surgeries at the current time and I 100% agree and understand. I just wondered if anyone knew how late we could leave it before he turns into a grown aggressive, spraying, sex obsessed tomcat. He hasnt been allowed out yet and we will keep him in now to keep the lady cats safe. He's such a nice loving little chap I know there's enough to be worrying about at the moment so any reassurance would be kind.

Oh dear. You may be in trouble if he starts spraying; it may become habitual behaviour rather than instinctive will carry on after being neutered.

I'd keep an eye out for that and also trying to shag stuff.

I rang up my vets to book my kitten in at approx 3 months and I could almost hear the vet nurse hoiking her bosom when she said "that's not ethical".

I replied "well, he's shagging his blankie to 'happy ending' stage".

It was true - quite funny because he'd achieve nirvana than collapse, you could imagine him reaching for the fags* while cuddling blankie.

*only people over 50 will understand reference!

Well if he hasn’t yet he might not. I practically begged my vet to castrate our departed boy at 20 weeks, we only got him at 17 weeks, but they refused so he went to a local vets instead.

All you heard in our house was dh saying “stop biting mommy” & me squealing in pain.

Ours was practising on his sister when we picked him up.

'That's not ethical' - in rescue he'd have been done at 1kg.

Our vet was stunned when we turned up with our rescue cats for their second jabs, already neutered despite being tiny scraps. Made life so much easier that they weren't screaming at the windows trying to go out for a shag when they barely had a brain cell between them.

Welldone for keeping him in until he’s done. Can you not try another vet? How long are they delaying the appointment for?

TheMemoryLingers · 21/03/2020 16:24

My little chap was about 10 months old when rescued and had already fathered kittens - obviously he was castrated before he came to me - his behaviour is no different from my late cat who was castrated as a kitten, - no spraying and he's the most affectionate cat I have ever had.

I'd try another vets.

Ours is running as usual, only difference is that you wait in your car opposed to using the waiting room which we have to normally do anyway with our nervy pup.

Thanks so much for replying. My mum suggested calling around vets too which I will do. He's not aggressive yet but I can't wear my fluffy dressing gown because that's like cat porn for him
I know it's not a huge problem in the grand scheme of things but he's our responsibility and a crop of unwanted kittens around the area or other cats getting attacked would be a horrible problem for other peoples pets. Thanks again.

Yes, try to find another vets. It's a difficult situation at the moment. There was already a shortage of vets due to Brexit, and now this current crisis has made things a hundred times worse. There just aren't enough vets and all practices are struggling and cancelling appointments. But I would just try your best to find another one as soon as possible.

Hi. In answer to your question regarding your boy turning rampant I have experience with cats and have found they do get a bit horny, mounting behaviour and slight aggression towards people sometimes occurs (sexual frustration) and spraying, most people find the spraying more offensive as it’s pungent but I’ve found every time the spraying stops when they’re neutered, unless they’re really stressed, but then females often do the same. I’m not a vet but as soon as their hormones have kicked into gear I think is the time to get it done. And they’re so much happier afterwards and more loving. Smile

My cat got fixed on Friday in Edinburgh if your close and want to no where ?

Mammatino · 22/03/2020 15:46

We are in Yorkshire. I have a list of about 30 vets to call first thing and I will happily put him on the waiting lists in case of a cancellation. I can take him at the drop of a hat. We are not showing any symptoms of anything yet (long may it continue ) so not self isolating just social distancing. I think we will be OK for a few months but it needs doing sooner than later. The little so and so is desperate to get out and the warmer weather is coming and he will be out of the windows and across the garage before we know where we are. I hope you and your animals are all OK and able to get the pet foods and everything that you all need.
