When our cat went in they said it was just a small incision, I think some cats don't even need stitches? Our boy did and they did still look swollen down there - they assured us that the surgery had been done, it just wouldn't look like it until the swelling was better.

He was a bit sleepy after the drugs they gave him but otherwise okay. They didn't give us a cone at first because he hadn't touched the wound the whole time he was there but as soon as he got home he started trying to clean himself so we had to get him a cone, which he HATED.

He was totally fine though and didn't take too long to heal up, he had a follow up appt about a week later to remove the stitches that didn't fall out on their own and check up.

Hope your kitty is all okay tomorrow!

My 2 didnt get stitches and didnt need a cone and recovered in a day or so. They make a tiny incision to remove the testicles so often no stitches are required

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 20:05

You can google what they do too

JorisBonson · 09/03/2020 20:06

My boy had no stitches, came home soaking wet after playing in the water bowl in his recovery cage and was even more hyper than usual post anaesthetic 🙄

He had a tiny cut that they told us to keep an eye on in case he worried it but he was good as gold.

Haribo wasn't sleepy when he came home, he was absolutely hyper.

When I had my stray cat now furry overlord done, I was convinced he would run away never to be seen again, but he was back for breakfast the next morning, not a care in the world. He recovered very quickly. Good luck OP

Mine was always vocal on the way to the vets but I got a icy cold silence on the way home.

After neutering I got woken at 7am the next day with him biting my toes.

Your cat will be admitted probably by a vet nurse. He'll have a check up, be weighed and you will be talked through the anaesthetic consent form. You then go home. Your cat will have a pre-Med which is a painkiller/sedative combination to make him feel all chilled out. He will have anaesthetic gas to knock him out. Then his testicles will be prepped by having the hair removed and getting a surgical scrub. The vet will make a small incision over each side of the scrotum and remove each testicle. All sutures or ligatures are internal. The op site will be gently cleaned and your boy will be returned to the cat ward to recover. He should go home the same day. We send our boys home with a few days pain relief and the nurse sees them for a post op check 3-5 days after their op. You should expect him to be a bit sleepy tonight but almost 100% within 48hrs. If you have any worries post op just ring your vet and speak to them. He'll be fine, you'll probably worry more than him!

What a mess that was. I turned up with him only to be told it's not until next Friday but I got a txt reminder from them on Friday about today. Anyway I was informed today that he won't be put to sleep only given painkillers surely that's not normal?

Is he being castrated? I'm always very careful about saying "put to sleep" in relation to animals as it's a colloquial term for euthanasia. If he is being castrated he will need a general anaesthetic. Sometimes this is done with injectable drugs only, not gas. I use gaseous anaesthesia because I feel my patients come around more quickly but that's personal choice really. The safest anaesthetic is the one your vet is most comfortable with.

Whome91 · 10/03/2020 13:54

Yes castration

My two boys were both done at five months. Neither seemed to notice that anything was missing! One went completely hyper when I got him home, they'd said to keep him in overnight but after a couple of hours I gave up and let him out to run off some energy. He was absolutely fine. The other just came home and carried on as usual. Neither needed meds or a cone.

dementedpixie · 10/03/2020 15:01

My boys didnt get meds home or a follow up check. Was just told to keep an eye on the incision
