Suggestions for cat litter trays??

Hey all!

I'm getting a kitten at the end of the month and I want a good tray to help hold odour! I will definitely be investing in really good litter itself but do you have suggestions for good trays??

TIA!

I just use an xl high sided tray to help keep the litter in the tray.

Missgoldilocks · 05/03/2020 14:44

@dementedpixie I see! Do the litter trays that are covered not help with the smell or is there no point?

I am using an open tray with wood pellet litter and it doesn’t smell (provided I remove poos).

Our neighbour who I cat sit for has a covered tray with clumping litter and the lid keeps much of the smell in but omg the smell when I take the lid off...

I think choice of litter is key

sanitygirl · 05/03/2020 14:50

I got the Modkat covered one for my cat www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter_litter_boxes/hooded_litter_box/litter_boxes_without_filter/575492
it's excellent

Previously we had a standard open tray and it was messy and stinky

Missgoldilocks · 05/03/2020 14:51

@minipie Ohh I see...when I looked after my sisters cat she had a lidded one but it stunk still. I think it was the litter choice... I just really don't want my house to smell! So as long as you pick up the poo regularly and use a good litter it should be okay?

I use this cat litter www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/super_benek/461099

sanitygirl · 05/03/2020 14:52

You definitely need to scoop out the poos as soon as possible to avoid lingering smells. With a clumping litter you can also scoop out the wees

Missgoldilocks · 05/03/2020 15:00

@sanitygirl thank you! What about the liners for that tray?? Some people in the reviews are saying they are hard to find for that tray, which ones do you use?

OP posts:
sanitygirl · 05/03/2020 15:05

@Missgoldilocks it comes with a liner and you can buy an extra one at the same time from Zooplus - on the same link I posted above
(that's what I did, although I haven't used the extra one yet -it's washable and reusable)

Shouldbedoing · 05/03/2020 15:07

Will.you have a cat flap and out door space?
I use an outdoor waterproof tray

CornishPorsche · 05/03/2020 15:09

I have a tall covered tray my cat has used for over a decade.

The least smelly (and non-staining of her paws) litter I've found is wood pellet.

Clumping litter dyes her paws grey / brown which I don't like. The wood base stuff also breaks down to sawdust, which I think has to be marginally better for the environment.

However, I use black bin bags as the liner for the tray, as its then just tied up and put in the bin. If I could find compostable bin bags, that would make me feel better!

It's much like this, but without a door: www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/pets-at-home-hooded-cat-litter-tray

dementedpixie · 05/03/2020 15:10

I have this one

I dont line it as the cats just scratch through it

Jessie9323 · 05/03/2020 15:20

I have 4 cats and 4 trays. We use lidded trays, but take any flaps off (the cat door style bit) when money didn't matter we used catsan and never had an issue with smells. We now use a clump long littler from zooplus which is good but not as good as catsan hahaha. I'm
Spoilt but I was paying £40 a month for it now I'm only play £25 for my clumping biodegradable one!
We use liners just for ease of changing.

Missgoldilocks · 05/03/2020 15:39

Thank you everyone. I want to try the Americalitter because the reviews are great but it's expensive. I think I will get a lidded tray too

Wood pellet litter here too. No smell except for when there's a poo, which gets removed straight away. I gather the advantage with the clumping litter is you can go for longer without changing it. I prefer less smell. Dump the litter straight into the outside bin (no bag) once a week, give it a swish round with the outside tap, and then replace with fresh pellets. Takes two mins.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2020 22:39

I hated my Modkat Flip so just sold it on eBay for £20!!! I loved my pet mate top entry box but cheddar did't get it. Gone back to Wilko hooded tray.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2020 22:41

I gave up on my Modkat when zooplus stopped doing packs of three. You can use it without the liners but it's very awkward to empty.

Papergirl1968 · 05/03/2020 22:57

Pets At Home have a hooded litter tray which is designed to fit into a corner half price at the moment.
We have a normal hooded litter tray without the door on. But both kitten and fat cat seem to prefer using the kitten litter tray - fat cat has to sit in it with his front paws on the floor Grin
If you want to start off with a kitten tray, Pets At Home do them in blue or pink for £4.
As for the litter, we like Catsan.
Post a pic of the new arrival when you get him or her, please!

Holdingtherope · 05/03/2020 23:03
