New rescue kitten very vocal!

This is our new kitten, only had her 5 days. She's made herself at home, was very shy at first and just hid! Now she's cheeky and loving, but she's very noisy!! Is this a thing? Is she trying to talk? She walks around tries to catch your eye and if you look at her she meows, of you ignore her she meows until you look at her! Are some cats just vocal? She's fed, clean tray, fresh water, plenty toys, lots of laps available for cuddles, can't think what else she might need!

Percy is soooooo cute ♥

Awww that's a lovely name. Get markings are just too precious

HuggedTheRedwoods · 01/03/2020 13:13

She's lovely, love her little smile on the second pic. Our kitten was silent on the day she came home, started talking on day 2 and has never really shut up nearly 10 years on! She has different tones of meow for whatever she wants to say.

Once you recognise what certain sounds means talk back with that word so you build up your vocab with them, as FluffyCloudland77 says above its surprising how many words they can learn. e.g. when we get a croaky sad meow she's tired, and saying 'bobies?' back to her means she'll usually take herself to bed for an hour (sometimes its like she doesn't realise she needs to sleep until suggested!). Its nice she wants to communicate with you.

Fat Cat just sits and stares at me but Princess Potato is a talker and very demanding, mostly as she thinks that I am deliberately starving her

MayDayFightsBack · 01/03/2020 13:29

This really interests me. We had a really vocal cat that used to announce she was home when she came through the cat flap and then just generally 'talk' to you all the time. She was a really loud purrer as well.

We then got another rescue who was as quiet as quiet could be, you could barely hear him purr and he never made a peep when we first got him. Six months later he was almost as loud as her because he had learnt off her how to be a total noisy sod too. Grin It was really funny.

I find with cats that the more you talk to them they more they talk back. They reckon this 'talking' is something cats have developed to interact with humans and wild cats would never be vocal.

Beautiful cat ❤️

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2020 22:27

Cheddar is very vocal. We have proper conversations. She has an opinion on everything! My other cat started off mute, but has found her voice now. And is increasingly chatty. But she only ever gives me orders. He late sister was also incredibly bossy.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/03/2020 22:29

My old family cat was the town crier. She would enter a room with a full on ‘hear ye, hear ye’ and continue until she got a response from the humans

Omg! That is definitely cheddar! Unfortunately we can't post videos

I have a chatty black & white cat called Luna! My daughter has a theory that because we talked to her so much when she was a tiny kitten she thinks she's having a conversation with us. Not so welcome in the wee small hours, mind you.

Myshitisreal · 03/03/2020 12:45

How's that gorgeous wee kitten Luna doing

bobstersmum · 03/03/2020 17:21

@Want2beme your cat is gorgeous! When I first saw the photo I thought it looked like a miniature cat with some giant fingers holding it! My brain is weird!

@Myshitisreal she's great thanks! Really settled in, she's still meowing a lot but is also doing silent meows, what is that about!
Does anyone know what the best cat litter is? We are currently using the wooden pellets but I'm finding I have to empty loads of it each day so it's not going very far. And it smells like a stable.

Awwww that's so cute ♥. They are a mystery, like I said earlier one of ours trills meeps and squeaks but can miaow like a demon when on route to the vets. Sometimes it's just chat, sometimes it means something. I can read our two like books so you will learn her idiosyncrasies. We used to use tesco antibacterial litter but now use catsan. It is expensive but seems to last longer. My husband isn't a fan of the clumping litter and the natural stuff tends to sink like you say. I think it's trial and error for each person

steppemum · 04/03/2020 08:30

Did you know that cats only talk to humans?

They have a whole range of language that is exclusively for use with humans, they don't really talk to each other, other than the yowling when fighting or in heat.

Allergictoironing · 04/03/2020 08:44

They do say that, but mine have been known to converse between themselves e.g. after I've gone to bed, I sometimes hear them making noises as they charge up & down - not aggressive noises either, more conversational or "look at this". They also vocally challenge each other when they want a play fight.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/03/2020 08:53

Ours had a friend who would miaow for our boy when ours was in for the night. Ours would jump on the windowsill and miaow back.

sashh · 04/03/2020 08:55

Charlie used to 'chat' you could hold a conversation with him.

Madam, on the other hand, doesn't know what a miow is, she just goes 'Whaaa!' for anything.

She's a tabby stray but I think she has bengal in her. She's quite naughty and has taught herself to open doors.

She has also conned the neighbours into letting her in for food and a snooze.

Shmithecat2 · 04/03/2020 08:58

3 of mine are very vocal. Love a good natter. Our latest one (no.6, failed foster 😂) is hilarious, always complaining about something. Even when I was taking her picture.
