How to get dried cat poo off long haired cats bottom?

The cat has come in from outside with a less than desirable backside situation. He has poo matted on his fur round his bottom and back legs.

It seems to be dried and he’s quite long haired so I thought about cutting the fur to get it out.

He doesn’t like being picked up at the best of times. I’ve tried putting in a ‘purrito’ but even with two of us trying he wriggles out and can’t be held. I’ve got a bit cut off by feeding him and doing it it surreptitiously whilst he’s distracted, but he’s full now do that method is dead.

Any ideas?

Following as in the same situation, it was a bit of a poonami

RandomMess · 23/02/2020 18:23

I have to say we just give our cats a bum wash...

They complain loudly but no humans get injured in the process!

penberrh · 23/02/2020 18:25

How do you hold them to enable the washing Random? The minute I try to do it the cat will go mental and even two of us can’t contain him.

We got desperate and popped her to the vet nurse who clipped her bum for £2.50... worth every penny

CornishPorsche · 23/02/2020 18:27

Scissors here. Wet wipes, cloths and similar have always ended in disaster.

On one occasion when she was a real mess (poonami when we were all out at work) we ended up at the vet as she had basically burned her skin like a child in a dirty nappy for hours and wouldn't let me near her 😢 They took clippers to her and I had to get cream on her shorn bum twice a day for a couple of weeks.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 18:28

Vets for a hygiene trim!

frogsbreath · 23/02/2020 18:39

One person holding underarm and the other washing with shower head. We have a long haired cat that has a dicky tummy and needs the bum wash at least three times a year. It's grim.

RandomMess · 23/02/2020 18:42

What frogsbreath said; head under holders armpit and holding front paws. Bum under kitchen mixer tap or shower head.

Once boy cat got covered in oil. He wailed an awful lot...

Another other one for washing. After many years I realised that the important element was getting everything ready first before you let the cat know what's going on.

Small amount, a few inches, of warm water ready in the bath.

Small dish of shampoo to hand if you are using shampoo.

Plastic gloves on.

Towel ready.

Then and only then do you tell the cat what's occurring ........

Friend takes their cat to the groomers and has their fluffy back legs trimmed down a bit. Seems to help. No good if you have a show cat though.

hettysdrawers · 23/02/2020 18:51

We've had this issue (but fresh 'nuggets' Sad) IMO the only way is cutting. We've used a towel to keep legs in whilst the other cuts, or picking her up under her 'underarms' and dangling her in the air so you can then get underneath and chop, also find she's less able to squirm like that.

Then go to the vets and get them to give her a short back and sides to prevent it happening again as PP suggest.
Good luck- it's a distressing situation for all!

StillNotANewUser · 23/02/2020 18:53

For us it’s a 2 person job - one to feed dreamies in the front end (never too full for an extra dreamie) and the other to apply scissors to the rear Grin.

RandomMess · 23/02/2020 18:57

If there are nuggets they can be pulled off with a baby wipe pre-shower.

We are fortunate that our cats are super chilled and tolerant even the vets are surprised at what you can do to them without they need for a vet nurse and gauntlets Grin

I think most of it's gone now with the surreptitious cutting, and then he groomed himself a bit. He must have done the poo-bum-shuffle outside as he seemed to have half a bush and an assortment of other nature items attached to his nether quarters in addition to the poo when he first came in.

I think it would be a three person job to really get in there - one feeding dreamies at the meowing end, one holding backwards underarm with a pair of scissors, and another to hold the wretched tail out of the way.

Our cat has dedicated scissors for the occasional trim down there. One person holds her upside down (belly up) and the other makes quick work of trimming. She whines but can stay still for 30 seconds without wriggling.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 19:42

I had poonamies when they have both had diarrhoea. They were taken at arms length to the vet!

RandomMess · 23/02/2020 19:42

🤮

Our cats will even let us give them tablets 🤷🏽‍♀️

Toddlerteaplease · 23/02/2020 19:43

Mine go to a professional groomer. It costs more than my hair cuts!

We live in the countryside, had an especially lovely cat, originally a feral cat from a neighbouring farm, but became progressively more tame with me over time. The farm next door then got sold, was going to be purely residential, and the slurry pit was being filled in by some workmen. Now this cat was very coordinated and good with balance, she would walk along the top of gates etc. Came to me one day when workmen were next door, covered in slurry and mewing pitifully. She would never have fallen in, they must have thrown her, although I obviously didn’t see this happening. She was basically asking me to wash her, I did, with hosepipe on gently and towel etc. She didn’t ever get washed otherwise, was very clean. She put up with the water, rubbing etc, I didn’t have to restrain or hold her down. I still find it horrible to think how people can treat animals so cruelly. And sort of honoured that she came to me to ask for help.

TrainspottingWelsh · 23/02/2020 21:24

With one of mine it involves at least two people, one wearing long sleeves and thick leather gloves to hold her in a towel, the other to wield the scissors.

The one occasion the feral brushed against wet paint she didn't bat an eyelid as I did a patch of her side with horse clippers.

Weltans bastards.
