Hyperthyroidism in cats

My boy is 17 and has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. We've been considering treatments and are opting for the one a day tablets.

Up until 2 years ago he was my granny's cat and I love him very much (which is why my amazing husband is tolerating him). It is like having a newborn again as he meows constantly for an hour not needing food or wanting to go in out, just wanting company downstairs. He can come upstairs, which he does and meows until I follow him downstairs to sit in the living room. Last night was really bad - 1am-1.30am, then 3am to 5am on and off.

Having lived with my partially deaf grandmother, his meow is super loud. If I put him outside, he meows at the door to come in and it's so loud in my bedroom upstairs I worry about the neighbours.

Could this be linked to the hyperthyroidism? I'm really hoping he'll calm down once he's in the tablets as I can't function on so little sleep. I have 3dc and work full time. I've always had cats and have another 15 year old cat too but I've never come across such a needy cat.

If it's not linked to hyperthyroidism; does anyone have any suggestions? Please, I'm slightly despairing.

Yes, it can be linked to the hyperthyroidism and will settle once he's stable on the tablets.

Although sometimes elderly cats are very loud because they are (partially) deaf and can't hear how loud they are... That's what my old girl was like. It can also be a sign of feline dementia; my vet recommended a supplement called Aktivait for that.

Thank you. Fingers crossed. Last night he actually slept through the whole night but that was the first time in weeks. Not sure dh will ever agree to having cats again.

The change in our cat once her hyperthyroid was treated was dramatic.

To the extent that we were ashamed as we realised how long she had been ill and she wasn't really Annoying Cat but Hyperthyroid Cat.

@AnnaMagnani how long did the tablets take to really make the change? (We're only on day 2).
