Hi all - what is your opinion on vegan cat foods? Are there any that work, or is it just a terrible idea?

Terrible idea..We can choose but they can’t.

PartTimeEverything · 22/02/2020 13:00

Ok thanks everyone! I thought the same, but was just trying to settle an argument.

I’m terms Of ethically sourced food, does anyone have any good experiences to share? Currently using Tesco’s (which she loves) but considering moving to Lilly’s kitchen

Has anyone tried them?

I'm a vegan and I wouldn't do it to a cat. A dog can thrive without meat but a dog is a scavenger. A cat is a hunter.

Firsttimelottie · 22/02/2020 13:07

You would be a neglectful pet owner.

Get a pet that doesn't eat meat if you really can't bear to feed a carnivore what it actually needs.

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2020 13:23

Mine dont like lilys kitchen because its pate. You can buy them singly and put it in with her normal food abit more each day? Is she young?

OldGrinch · 22/02/2020 13:30

Mine like the Lily's Kitchen dried food

Vinorosso74 · 22/02/2020 13:55

My answer has already been said. No. Cats are obligate carnivores. That said twice I have caught ours eating chunks of raw butternut squash and he's partial to the occasional bit of cucumber!

PartTimeEverything · 22/02/2020 13:56

Yes @EachandEveryone she is quite young - i didn’t realise it was pate. Hmmm ... does anyone have any other recommendations?

Vin

Mine loses her mind for hummus, tomato sauce (the kind you have with pasta, not ketchup), and bloody loves oat milk.

FlamingoAndJohn · 22/02/2020 13:59

I have Natures Menu country hunter which is responsibly sourced etc.
I’ve just ordered a trial pack of Blink which says the same.

DramaAlpaca · 22/02/2020 14:00

Cats physically need a protein called taurine in their diet. It is only found in meat.

Cat food has taurine added to it, dog food doesn't. A dog would probably be fine eating cat food, but cats can't thrive on dog food. A cat simply will not be healthy if fed a vegetarian or vegan diet.

bernardswatchplease · 22/02/2020 14:00

I'm Vegan but my cat physically has to have meat

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/02/2020 14:01

cats and dogs are meant to eat meat

PippinStar · 22/02/2020 14:05

I'm vegan but my cats eat meat - both the one I provide for them and plenty that they find themselves! They really do need it to be healthy.

This list is good (but not exhaustive) for pet foods that aren't invasively tested on animals: www.peta.org.uk/living/non-animal-tested-companion-animal-food/

EachandEveryone · 22/02/2020 15:32

Sainsburys own brand the posher version in jelly is good. Mine never liked Blink.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 22/02/2020 23:14

To be fair, most of the taurine that most pet cats eat is vegan - it’s made in labs by the tonne from simpler inorganic molecules and added to commercial cat food to ensure the correct nutritional balance. So it’s a very simple thing to supplement for a vegan cat diet.

However there are other problems with a vegan diet for cats and I wouldn’t do it myself.
