Introducing my cats to going to the loo outside

Hi
I have two female cats, 1 is 9 months the other is 11 months. Both have been going outside during the day while I am work for the last three months. They currently have two indoor cat litter trays, but ideally I would like to encourage them to only use these at night when they are indoors. When I next clean the litter out can I put some of the old litter out in the garden where I would like them to use ( I have a row of conifers which I think will be an ideal spot as its private and sheltered) as a toilet? Will they smell the litter and go to that place?

Watching because my two come tearing into the house to use the tray then pootle out to the garden again!

Do you know if they use the garden during the day?
My male will pooh in the tall planter (cheeky little toad)

Our previous cat refused to use a tray , even locked in at night . She loved a freshly dug over bit of soil .

You could dig over a patch and rake in some of their used litter ?

Though, in a way , I'm pleased with my cats' toilet habits - my neighbours can never accuse my cats of shitting in their gardens. I have Bagged Evidence that they don't Grin

Yes , buy some seeds , make the soil all nice and sow them.
Say "Now cats, I want these to grow lovely , so paws off"............they'll be In Like Flynn !

Start to move the litter tray outside (prepare for accidents!). We always did that with our cats and I suggested friends did the same. But of course, as others above said, plant a flower bed! They were overjoyed each time Mum planted anything and would be straight there to christen it!

This was me last year - 2 female cats - one took to going outside like a dream, and rarely uses the tray. The other one refuses to go outside - we tried religously last summer by putting the tray outside during the day and mixing her litter with soil, but alas, she just wants to go indoors.

Please keep your cats used to the indoor litter tray.
The neighbourhood cats are using my garden to shit in.
Your neighbours will not welcome the visitors leaving their deposits in the flower borders and vegetable patches.

Please be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your own cat shit! If you don’t want to deal with litter trays, you can bet the rest of us who don’t choose to have cats don’t want to either!

If your cat goes out you have no control where it shits. Sorry about that.
Of my cats, they prefer to toilet outside so I have a few largish areas left unplanted and turn them over so the soil is soft and they tend to go there. Most of my neighbours have cats though, so gardening is always done with gloves on.

I always dig over a flower bed with a blackbird watching me on one side (freshly exposed worms) and a cat on the other. Grin
