DCat approx 18ish,...... developed croaking breathing issues a week or so ago. He has had scan, bloods taken, all clear,.... they initially said asthma or hairballs, but the problem is getting worse - almost like there's a blockage in his throat, and it is getting distressing as it's constant unless he is lying down. Sounds like a barking from his throat and his stomach is working really hard to breathe at times.

Back to vets today for emergency appt, they have booked him in for endoscopy tomorrow, and further tests. I've been sitting with him this afternoon wracked with guilt - the further tests are £900 on top of the £500 spent last week, and then what?!! At his age?

I am wondering if the kinder thing to do is to ask a vet to come out to home (given we have been back and forth to the vets this week) and put him to sleep before he gets any worse.

I feel awful just typing that, can't stop crying, but at his age I can't see how any news will be good,........ I don't know what to do. He is the most loved cat who has had the most adored life, seen me and DS through some difficult times and was stealing sausages from plates only 10 days ago. Sad Sad Sad

It could be his thyroid. Try cutting out anything with fish in it and no salt, either. Maybe make some chicken broth with just chicken, butter and water. See if he seems better in a day or two. Our old dog gets a croaking sound when breathing when he eats iodine.

It sounds as though he might have something trapped in his throat. I cat came into our clinic with similar sounding symptoms - he had the biggest piece of chicken bone you've ever seen stuck down his throat. I would at least have an exploratory op to rule out something similar.

I'd let them do the endoscopy as it could be a foreign body. If they find a more serious issue then go from there.

Thank you. He got considerably worse overnight and was pts this morning. Too distressing for further investigations at his age and he was struggling to get off the bed. Vet agreed it was the kindest option so they came out to my house to do it. Devastated.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Definitely the kindest but the most difficult decision to have to make. He was lucky to be so loved and adored. May he rest in peace.
