Introducing kitten to older cat.

Hi.

I'm a newbie here...

We have just gotten an 8 week old kitten a week ago.

We have done the scent exchange and also had the kitten in the carrier asleep on the couch while the older 8 year old cat was free to roam.

Most times he just walks past the carrier...other times he will stop and hiss.
When we put the kitty in my daughters room, the older boy will smell the empty carrier...and sometimes will hiss, sometimes just smell.

We now have the kitten (whose a female) in a playpen in the corner of the family room.
My older boy (when he thinks we’re not looking) will go past the pen, stop and do a hiss... BUT... over the last 24 hours, he will actually come out and lay in the family room...about 3 metres from the pen. He still does the walk past and hiss...but he will actually allow himself to fall asleep on his side in the same room.

My kitten is currently asleep in her pen, and my older boy is currently asleep on the floor about five metres away.

So, is it going to plan.....and are we doing the right thing?

Any further advice will be helpful...xx

P.S: while he has hissed and done little growls, he hasn’t swiped at her, or fluffed his body up to seem “larger”....xx

Yes it sounds like your doing the right thing but don’t rush it and just let your adult cat adjust at his own speed.

He’s bound to be a bit hissy, it’s like your dh moving Katrina from accounting in because he loves you so much he’s decided he’d like two wives. You’d be pissed off.

Hence why my dh is no longer my dh... 😂

Great analogy though...and you did make me laugh at the same time...xx

Try some feliway friends plug in too. And take it super slow. Don't force anything

Bought the Feliway yesterday and started using it straight away. I did read that Feliway takes a good week to work.

I have it on during the day, but switch it off at night, as he sleeps in my room and the kitten in my daughter's room.

His currently snuggled up in bed with me and kneeding my shirt with one of his paws...so I think his trying to tell me that we're ok...and I am showing him lots of affection, to let him know we're ok, on my behalf...

Fingers crossed it works out...xx

I don't think the diffusers should be switched on and off with feliway- something about the reed/wick drying out and it can stop working.

The big boy is coming out and laying in the same room more and more....and he hasn't hissed today, thus far.

And now when I pat her and then pat him, he doesn't edge away....

Looks like the slow introduction is going to plan... 🤞
