Cat eye problem?

I’ve just noticed that my cat’s left eye doesn’t look ‘right’. She isn’t opening it as fully as the right eye and the colouring looks a bit off. I’ve spent the last hour chasing her around the house trying to get a good look (she’s not one for sitting still!) and her pupils look like they are different sizes but not constantly and I’m not sure if the whole eye area is swollen making the pupil look smaller. There is no discharge that I can see and I can’t see her third eyelid. She’s suffered no trauma that I am aware of and she hasn’t been outside since yesterday lunchtime and she didn’t leave the garden so she’s been nowhere near a road. It is possible that the other cat has swiped her in play or she’s scratched it on something, she’s a nutter! I’ve shone a pen torch into her eyes and both react quickly as they should.

Sorry for the poor quality photos, like I said she’s not one for sitting still. I’ll make a vet appointment tomorrow but Dr google is making me worry Sad

And as relieved as I’ll be if it’s a simple infection the thought of getting eye drops into her eyes is not an appealing one Grin

I'm one who is usually fairly relaxed about cat ailments and wait a few days to see if they clear up by themselves before going the vet.

However in this case I think your decision to go to the vet as a priority today is absolutely the right one. Hopefully it's an easily remedied minor problem but better safe than sorry.

Let us know what the vet says.

Oh dear, do let us know what the vet thinks. Eye things used to worry me too.

I’m in the waiting room. Weirdly the eye looks normal now, at 3am we were up because dd2 was throwing up (to add to the joy) and it looked swollen, at 7am it looked almost normal and now it looks ok Confused

I still want to get it properly looked at so I’ve kept the appointment

Well obviously. Lazarus style recovery is standard fit on cats.

FlyingFlamingo · 22/01/2020 16:42

The vet diagnosed Horner’s syndrome, although he couldn’t find a cause. Her eye looks healthy and she looks healthy and as she’s young and hasn’t undergone any trauma the cause isn’t obvious. He’s given me metacam and said to go back if it happens again.

He did ask if it’s possible she ran into a wall/door - I said that would be very possible but I didn’t see it Grin

I already have a cat with hyperestesia so now I have 2 with weird brains it seems Grin

I’m glad it’s nothing life threatening!.

FlyingFlamingo · 22/01/2020 18:55

Is it just me though or do vets just give you a bottle of metacam if they aren’t sure what’s going on? Hmm

Horners syndrome? Hmm... my cat has the same funny eye. She has done for a couple of years now and I did take her to the vets initially and they just said she probably hurt it a little having a scrap (very unlikely) and it's never really recovered. It doesn't bother her at all and is only slightly noticeable when I look closely at her face. I put it down to her coming from a line of inbred feral farm cats with a whole range of health issues, add the fact that she was abandoned by mama cat at under two weeks old (literally dumped outside my door twice even after I placed her back in the mum's 'nest' with the other kittens) and I had to hand rear her, I'm surprised she's here at all.

FlyingFlamingo · 22/01/2020 19:38

That’s funny - she was hand reared as well after being abandoned as a kitten. She is an idiot so probably inbred too. I was attempting to give her the metacam earlier, I got half into her and she escaped and ran off. I gave chase and half way through the next room she seemed to forget she was meant to be running away and just stopped and looked at me Grin

I think it’s mandatory. You can’t leave until they've had a long lasting painkiller/antibiotic and some follow up meds.

I want to have long lasting antibiotics, we have to take ours 4 hourly.

FlyingFlamingo · 22/01/2020 20:34

To be fair I’ve never been offered antibiotics, just metacam...
