Will Felix help put weight on?

Demelza is normally fed hills wet food. She used to love it but she’s stopped eating it. She’s not keen on dry food either. She’s been to the vets again today as she had lost weight since her op.

He said we should try wiskas or Felix to get some weight on her.

Iv bought a box and she demolished a pouch. She’s now happily grooming herself purring away.

I feel so bad and I’m abit worried. Will it cause her to have bad poops? More hyper? Smell?

We’ve tried so many different expensive brands!

Felix is crap but if it's a choice between eating and not eating ...

But it is kind of McDonalds for cats.

I would check out some of the high protein brands. Most will send a free sample if you email them.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/01/2020 11:01

It is very fashionable on MN to knock commonly available pet food brands. I have even seen people on here stating that they cause kidney failure.
All I can say is that mine primarily eat Felix (agail) plus IAMs munchies and whatever they catch or scrounge and they appear to thrive on it. Last two cats lived to 17 & 20.
I'd go with your vet's recommendation.

viccat · 21/01/2020 11:02

I was going to say pretty much exactly what justcly has said above. It's not the best but lots of cats live on it all their lives. Not sure if it will help with weight gain though...

Have you tried cooking her plain chicken breast? Or some of the high protein premium foods like Thrive, Blink or similar?

SmileCheese · 21/01/2020 11:06

I can't see your vets logic. I don't see how felix is any more likely to increase weight gain than any other better quality food.

I would recommend feeding plain chicken or other meat instead of felix it would be much more appealing and more likely to encourage her to eat.

Heyjude20 · 21/01/2020 11:32

Tried chicken. She’s ok with it but won’t eat much of it. She’s currently 2kg and was 2.4kg before her op.
We’ve tried hi-life, hills, royal canine.

I wondered how Demelza was getting on. Has she put any weight on over the weekend?

I was going to suggest chicken - try some wings or drumsticks as (to me) they smell stronger. What about some cheap fish (pollock or coley)? My vet suggested tinned pilchards when an old cat was struggling with appetite. Tuna canned with spring water, not oil or brine, might be a good compromise (assuming you don't mind eating the rest of the tin).

When Girlcat started turning her nose up at the cans of Feringa I'd bought (and we had plenty left), I found that popping a few of her treats on the top (dried meat/fish or the non-biscuit sticks/kibble) would encourage her to the dish and then she'd keep going.

We seem to have a lot of shops (convenience stores/garden centres/supermarkets) that sell individual small (£) tins/foils/sachets of cat food. I wouldn't worry too much that it isn't kitten food at the moment. I'd just buy a few of those and see which she prefers or maybe ask a friend whether you can try a sachet of their cat's favourite).

Please give your cat a big cuddle from me.

theoriginalmadambee · 21/01/2020 12:35

Don't know your back story, but mine puts on weight (a lot) with Hill's Prescription Diet c/d Urinary Stress.

If your cat is picky, mine adores the fattest Purina One, so much so they only get them as treats.

fishonabicycle · 21/01/2020 13:40

Mine both love whiskas crunchy and tender - I leave bowls out all the time. However, girl cat is still teeny and slim despite eating almost constantly.

Plump82 · 21/01/2020 14:53

What age is Demelza? Are they concerned about her weight over all or because she's losing weight. My little Feda is just over 2lb at 6 months old and the vets said she was fine, just a little petit cat.

Plump82 · 21/01/2020 14:53

*Freda not Feda!

Will Felix help put weight on?

Yes. Yes it will.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2020 15:25

When mine was alive he loved it but it wasn’t very filling and he’d nag for pouch after pouch.

Co-op own brand was the same.

EachandEveryone · 21/01/2020 17:09

Doe it really matter as long as they are eating? Mine have half a pouch each a day. They like it above all the posh stuff and, believe me, we’ve had them all. Have you tried putting those lik e lix paste things on top of the food you want her to eat? I used to do that if mine were under the weather.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2020 17:13

You could try giving kitten food as its supposed to be more calorific

lilmishap · 21/01/2020 17:19

Stinky tinned fish is excellent. Also eggs, One of mine has non regenerative anaemia and is underweight despite only being 2 I add a few tins mackerel (35-60p) sardines and once a week a bit of tuna, scrambled eggs lol bit of cheese mixed in twice weekly (because he doesn't love it enough but my other cat goes nuts for it) . Not the whole tin of tuna though, vet said not to.
I'm feeding Crave ATM, which is stoopidly expensive.
Following with interest though.

lilmishap · 21/01/2020 17:21

The named brands are crap and the posher healthy ones have cereal, it makes their poo stink the house out!

justcly · 21/01/2020 17:23

I don't know if you've considered Sheba. My mum buys it for mine when she's babysitting. They act like it's caviar.

Heyjude20 · 21/01/2020 17:54

She’s loving the wiskas, her poo not so much!!

She’s had abit of a wet poo this evening. Her poops were perfect before this.

I’m going to see what else I can get
Tomorrow. I’m going to look at the local feed shop for farm animals.

You're supposed to phase new food in gradually. Could be why there is runny poo

YesItsMeIDontCare · 21/01/2020 18:39

Whiskas gives Leroy the runny arse from hell. Felix As Good As It Looks Doubly Delicious (and absolutely NO other, don't even go there, not even with your "posh" stuff) he's fine on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/01/2020 18:46

Whiskas did that to mine too.

Heyjude20 · 21/01/2020 20:06

Opps it isn’t Whiskas, it’s Felix as good as it looks kitten one.
