Is this normal practice?

We just had Dkitten neutered and the vet has said we need to come back three days post op and 2 weeks post op. When we had our female cat spayed 8 years ago we never went back at all. They just told us to bring her back if the incision looked infected. Is this normal to do 2 follow-up appointments for a male?

Can only speak for my experience. Went back I think a few days later to have would checked and temperature taken.

Aftercare was included in price.

we had 2 kittens spayed recently and we were told to bring them back after a week then a further fortnight later for checkups. maybe your vet 8 years ago wasn't very good, or maybe there has been published research during the last 8 years which had shown the benefits of closer monitoring during the weeks after neutering?

I'm just surprised. I didn't have this much follow-up for an operation. But I suppose the NHS is the lowest bar.

We had no follow up appointments for boycat (done last month) or previous cats decades ago.

Girl cat had to go back after 2 and 10 days.

The follow up appts were included in the neutering fee.

We had follow up appts for both male and female kittens. In fact, the female had two, as he wanted to check her again after the first visit (guess it’s a bigger op for the girl).

Aftercare was provided with the cost of the neutering.

Boy cat they didnt want to see.
Girl cat they did after a few days. And the I rang them aboutc2 weeks post OP, as I wasnt gappycwith the stitches, and they saw her again (for free).

OTOH, the freaks we used yo neuter were released 12 hrs post op back into the wild and never seen by a vet again!

That is feral cats, not freak cats Blush

We don't do routine follow ups. We just give people a care sheet with warning signs to look out for.

We see all our surgical procedures at 3 and 10 days post op you would be astounded by the number of people who don't see potentially really serious complications such as infections due to pets licking their wound. Lots of my surgeries go home with intradermal sutures so nothing to see on the surface, but if I have concerns about the owner being diligent at post op follow up I put in nylon sutures that have to be removed.

Also had multiple follow ups at the vet here. Far more than you would get for a serious human operation.
